Day Camp Unit Leader

POSITION SUMMARY:

Provides direction, leadership, and guidance to counselors within the assigned groups. Plans and implements activities and ensures the safety of campers.

GENERAL WORK SCHEDULE: 

Monday – Friday, up to 40 hours per week, while the camp program is in session.  Must be available to work between the hours of 7:00 am and 6:00 pm. This is a seasonal summer position.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Oversee the activities of several camper groups. Plan and implement camp activities on schedule, as per the program design.
2. Provide direction and leadership to counselors of the assigned groups.
3. Identify and resolve problems. Implement appropriate discipline techniques and procedures.
4. Actively ensure the safety and well-being of all children by adhering to YMCA Buffalo Niagara Child Abuse Prevention policies. Recognize, respond to, and immediately report any suspected abuse, policy violations, or safety concerns.
5. Pursue innovative and creative ways to implement camp components.
6. Ensure effective communication with staff and parents of campers.
7. Develop and maintain positive, open communication between campers and camp staff.
8. Participate with campers when needed, including in the pool during swim lessons and free swim.
9. Maintain and enforce the work rules and regulations as required by YMCA Buffalo Niagara, the NYS Health Department and other regulatory agencies.
10. Perform administrative tasks including attendance, parent evaluations and health records.
11. Set up and organize equipment and supplies for camp activities.
12. Follow and enforce department protocol to clean and disinfect commonly used surfaces. Enforces PPE compliance.
13. Maintain the cleanliness and organization of program/work areas.
14. Assume the responsibilities of counselors when needed to cover absences.
15. Attend staff meetings, training sessions, and field trips as scheduled.
16. Implement ongoing safety checks to ensure a healthy and safe camp environment.  Implement emergency procedures when necessary.
17. Always remain with the assigned group and keeps constant, visual track of all assigned campers unless relieved by a qualified staff person.
18. Complete additional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Must have one (1) or more years of experience as a Senior Counselor or other equivalent position.
2. Excellent leadership and communication skills.
3. Able to successfully plan and lead activities for children in a camp environment.
4. Must be at least 18 years of age.
