Day Camp Counselor at YMCA Camp Kenan

YMCA Buffalo Niagara operates Outdoor Adventure Day Camps.  Camp activities include swimming, nature study, hiking, archery, gaga pit games, arts & crafts, and more.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Provides leadership and guidance to campers. Plans and implements camp activities and ensures the safety of campers.

GENERAL WORK SCHEDULE:  

Monday – Friday, up to 40 hours per week, while the camp program is in session.  Must be available to work between the hours of 7:00 am and 6:00 pm.

Bus transportation from Lockport is available.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Plan and implement camp activities as per the program design.
2. Supervise the assigned group of campers.
3. Identify and resolve problems. Implement appropriate discipline techniques.
4. Actively ensure the safety and well-being of all children by adhering to YMCA Buffalo Niagara Child Abuse Prevention policies. Recognize, respond to, and immediately report any suspected abuse, policy violations, or safety concerns.
5. Report behavior problems and safety issues to unit leader or other supervisor.
6. Pursue innovative and creative ways to implement camp components.
7. Develop and maintain positive, open communication between campers and camp staff.
8. Maintain and enforce work rules and regulations as required by YMCA Buffalo Niagara, the NYS Department of Health, and other regulatory agencies.
9. Maintain attendance records and perform other administrative tasks.
10. Participate with campers in the pool during swim lessons and free swim.
11. Attend staff meetings, training sessions, and field trips as scheduled.
12. Implement ongoing safety checks to ensure a healthy and safe camp environment. Implement emergency procedures when necessary.
13. Always remain with the assigned group and keep constant, visual track of all assigned campers unless relieved by a qualified staff person.
14. Set up and organize equipment and supplies for camp activities.
15. Follow and enforce department protocol to clean and disinfect surfaces. Enforce PPE compliance.
16. Maintain the cleanliness and organization of program areas.
17. Perform additional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. One (1) year of experience supervising children is preferred.
2. Able to successfully plan and lead activities for children in a camp environment.
3. Must be dependable and responsible.
4. Must be at least 16 years of age.
