Job Summary:
The School Nutrition & Aftercare Specialist supports the effective operation of the school’s nutrition program and the Aftercare/Enrichment Program. This role assists with serving lunch (no cooking required), ensures proper sanitation and allergen-safe practices, provides a safe and engaging after-school environment for students, and performs clerical, supervisory, and support tasks as needed. The Specialist must obtain ServSafe Food Handler and ServSafe Allergens Certification within 90 days of hire.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist with daily meal service including food portioning, serving, restocking, and maintaining cleanliness.
- Follow food safety and sanitation standards; maintain food safety logs.
- Support lunchroom setup, cleanup, and meal accountability procedures.
- Assist with receiving and storing food items.
- Follow dietary accommodations and allergy‑safe procedures.
- Conduct engaging after‑school activities for students.
- Provide supervision, homework help, and safe transitions.
- Maintain student attendance, calendars, and required documentation.
- Support lead teachers with materials, activities, and classroom organization.
- Monitor and report student behavior per school procedures.
- Maintain bulletin boards, program materials, and communications.
- Assist with registration and family communication.
- Ensure student health and safety at all times.
- Provide exceptional customer service to students, staff, and families.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Knowledge of safe food handling and USDA meal service requirements.
- Ability to follow ServSafe guidelines and food allergy safety protocols.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to maintain accurate records.
- Ability to supervise and support children in structured and unstructured settings.
- Ability to work cooperatively with staff and maintain a positive environment.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions and apply school policies.
Education & Certification Requirements:
- High School Diploma or GED.
- ServSafe Food Handler Certification (required within 90 days).
- ServSafe Allergens Certification (required within 90 days).
- CPR/First Aid preferred or required within school timelines.
- Experience in food service, school nutrition, or childcare preferred.
Work Environment & Physical Demands:
- Standing, walking, lifting, and carrying up to 50 pounds.
- Bending, squatting, reaching, and repetitive motions.
- Working in warm kitchen environments.
- Effective communication using speech, vision, and hearing.
