Position Overview

The Pre-Op/Phase 1 PACU, Phase 2 Post-Op Registered Nurse plays a vital role in delivering safe, compassionate, and high-quality surgical patient care throughout the perioperative experience. This position provides direct nursing care, patient education, assessment, monitoring, and recovery support for patients before and after surgery. While working closely with surgeons, anesthesia providers, and the surgical team, the RN ensures patients receive individualized care while at Yellowstone Surgery Center.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

Patient Care & Clinical Responsibilities

  • Provide safe, therapeutic, and quality patient care to pre-operative and post-anesthesia patients utilizing the nursing process and nursing diagnosis while setting appropriate priorities
  • Carry out physician orders accurately, promptly, and document all activities appropriately
  • Complete patient charting accurately, concisely, and promptly
  • Complete discharge procedures safely, including post-operative instructions and assisting patients to their vehicles
  • Respond appropriately in emergent situations
  • Follow AORN Recommended Practices and Center policies at all times

 

Patient Communication & Education

  • Communicate and interact with patients and families in a positive, supportive, and professional manner
  • Initiate and participate in patient and family education
  • Make pre-op phone calls for verbal patient assessments and review pre-operative instructions
  • Perform post-op phone calls and communicate concerns or problems as needed
  • Communicate appropriate patient care information to surgeons and anesthesiologists

 

Teamwork & Collaboration

  • Work closely with the surgical team using a multidisciplinary approach to patient care
  • Assist visitors, staff, and physicians while demonstrating excellent guest relations
  • Participate in the orientation of new employees, students, and approved program participants
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings, communication groups, and in-service programs
  • Work in a spirit of teamwork and trust while maintaining professional boundaries
  • Demonstrate respectful behavior toward patients, families, physicians, and co-workers at all times

 

 

Quality, Compliance & Safety

  • Participate in quality assurance monitoring
  • Observe all safety precautions and comply with facility health and safety procedures
  • Adhere to OSHA guidelines for Universal Precautions and proper use of PPE
  • Maintain required professional licenses and certifications
  • Comply with cost containment practices
  • Accept responsibility for personal conduct and professional behavior

 

Flexibility & Additional Responsibilities

  • Perform duties in various peri-operative areas as requested by the supervisor
  • Demonstrate flexibility to support operational and patient care needs
  • Perform other duties as assigned

 

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to walk. The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb, balance, stoop, or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

 

  • Normal hospital environment with exposure to chemical odors, cleaning solvents, and other hazardous materials
  • Exposure to possible injury when working with electrical equipment and lasers, which requires care and following proper safety procedures

 

Sedentary                Primarily sitting/lifting 10 lbs maximum

Light                        Lifting 20 lbs maximum with frequent lifting/carrying up to 10 lbs

Medium       X         Lifting 50 lbs maximum with frequent lifting/carrying up to 20 lbs

Heavy                      Lifting 100 lbs maximum with frequent lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs

Very Heavy              Lifting over 100 lbs with frequent lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs

 

Bloodborne Pathogens:

Based on the OSHA guidelines for protection against occupational exposure to Hepatitis and HIV, this position is described as Category I. This means the position has exposure to blood and other body fluids. Policies are in place for Universal Precautions, exposure risk identification, and appropriate barrier protection.

Qualifications:

Education, Experience, Licensure/Certification requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
  • Current State RN license
  • Current CPR certification
  • Prefer three years of PACU/Pre-Op experience, preferably in an ambulatory surgery center
  • ACLS certification preferred /or obtained ASAP after the start of employment
  • PALS certification preferred /or obtained ASAP after the start of employment
  • Will consider 2 years of ICU experience instead of PACU experience
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to function in a fast-paced, service-oriented environment

Salary : $37 - $52
