What are the responsibilities and job description for the Deckhand position at Yazoo River Towing, Inc.?
Job Objective:
Upkeep and maintenance of our vessels while doing so safely in accordance with all rules and regulations set forth by the United States Coast Guard.
Employee's key responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Handle lines to moor the motor vessel to docks, locks or another motor vessel
- Rig tow lines
- Lay and affix rigging
- Sweep decks using a broom, brush or mop
- Stand lookout watches while the motor vessel is underway
- Load or unload materials and supplies from docks or other vessels
- Maintain decks and superstructure of the motor vessel using a chipper, scraper and/or brush
- Lubricate and monitor machinery and equipment
- Splice and repair wires and lines using hand tools
- Examine cables that hold barges and motor vessel in tow, requires using a ratchet to tighten cables to ensure barges and vessel are snug
- Check barges and barge void tanks for leakage
- Learn, follow and abide by all company safety procedures and policies as stated in company safety management system and any aplicable laws, regulations and all other legal requirements.
- Responsible for the safety of yourself as well as your fellow crew members and the vessel at all times.
- Must immediately report to the Captain all safety hazards and dangerous conditions which might be encountered on the motor vessel or the tow.
- Responsible for observing all rules of conduct and standards of work, written and unwritten, prescribed by the company
- Responsible for keeping the motor vessel, engine room and storage areas clean, orderly and in good repair at all times. This includes painting and keeping all rigging in good working order as well as your personal living area, lounge, showers and bathroom.
- Observe the motor vessel chain of command at all times: to follow all orders and instructions in keeping with the intention of the orders and instructions. Deckhands are subject to orders from the Captain, Pilot and Mate.
- Apply yourself to all assigned tasks in order to obtain the necessary knowledge and experience to enhance job advancement and to attain United States Coast Guard licenses and certifications if possible
- To participate as requested in the Safety and Health Program
- Must always have a valid TWIC Card in his/her possession at all times
- Take whatever actions necessary to prevent accidents
- Demonstrate the ability to work effectively as a team member
- Take and follow instrcutions
- All other duties assigned
Work Schedule:
28 day working schedule: seven days a week, followed by 14 days off. Schedule while on vessel consists of 6 hour shift rotations.
Working Conditions:
Nearly all of the physically demanding work of the deckhand is performed outisde either on the deck, of the motor vessel or on barges in tow, day or night, during all seasons of the year, in all conditions of weather, including weather extremes of heat and cold. From time to time the deckhand will also be required to work in confined spaces such as barge wing tanks.
Initiative:
All deckhands willbe expected to take the initiative in all areas if work, be willing to ask questions about specific tasks when unsure and be willing to help at all times when assistance is needed; even when not requested.
Physical Requirements:
The physical work requirements for this position are classified as very heavy work, during which employees will exert 100 pounds of force occasianally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects when making tow or performing other tasks.
Mental Requirements:
The very physical nature of the work of a deckhand requires that individuals have the ability to concentrate on each assigned task as well as perform the task in a safe annd efficient manner. Must also remain alert at all times while on watch. As a member of the crew you will have to experience periods of seperation from family and friends while on a normal tour of duty.
Equipment Used:
A variety of equipment will be used to complete job duties, such as but not limited to, barge pumps, running lights, ratchets, cheater bars, sledge hammers, toothpicks, marlin spikes, fids, towing wires, straps, chains, lines, boat and barge fittings such as timber heads, spools, cavels and buttons. Safety equipment including work vests and safety (steel toed) boots, a billed cap, work gloves, knives, flashlights and other personal lighting systems, mops, brushes, hoses and barge and boat winches.
Clothing:
Shirts and long pants are required. Clothing shall not be so loose that it presents a hazard. Steel toe boots are required with a slip resistant sole. Additional PPE may be required depending on the hazards associated with the task.
