What are the responsibilities and job description for the Conventional Turning Machinist — Poreba Engine Lathe Specialist position at Yates Industries, Inc.?
A day in the life
You arrive to the Repair department and step up to a Poreba manual engine lathe. Blueprints in hand, you dial in your setup, select jaws, set tool heights, and confirm clearances. You calculate dimensions and tolerances, check offsets, and begin turning components that keep hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders working in the field. Between passes, you verify critical dimensions with micrometers and gauges, adjust feeds and speeds, and log in‑process checks. You keep an eye on oil levels and lubrication, swap worn tooling, and coordinate with teammates so production commitments are met safely and on time.
What you’ll do
High school diploma or GED, plus one to five years in a job‑shop environment (or an equivalent mix of education and experience).
Language Ability
Read and understand simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos; write short correspondence; clearly present information in one‑on‑one and small group settings to customers, clients, and coworkers.
Math Ability
Add, subtract, multiply, and divide across whole numbers, fractions, and decimals; compute rates, ratios, and percentages; draw and interpret bar graphs.
Reasoning Ability
Apply common‑sense understanding to carry out instructions delivered in written, oral, or diagram form; handle problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Equipment you’ll run
The role is hands‑on on the shop floor: regular standing and walking; frequent hand use and reaching; talking and hearing throughout the shift. At times you will sit, climb/balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Occasional lifting/moving of 25 pounds is part of the work.
Work environment
In the manufacturing/repair shop you’ll wear safety glasses and hard‑sole, closed‑toe shoes with a low heel. Long hair must be tied back near flame, machinery, or equipment. You’ll regularly work near moving mechanical parts and may occasionally encounter fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and vibration. The noise level is typically loud.
