Yarmouth Veterinary Center is a well-rooted, community-driven, privately owned practice located in Cumberland Foreside, Maine. We are looking for a dedicated and compassionate full-time Veterinary Assistant to join our growing team. In this role, you will partner with our veterinarians and support staff to deliver outstanding care across a diverse patient base, including dogs, cats, and a variety of exotic pets.
Duties
- Assist veterinarians and colleagues during exams, treatments, surgical procedures, dental care, and more.
- Greet clients, obtain thorough patient history, and record information in our practice software.
- Collect and process laboratory samples; perform in-house diagnostic testing.
- Take and process digital radiographs.
- Communicate treatment plans and patient updates to clients.
- Maintain thorough and accurate medical records for all patients.
- Uphold clinic cleanliness and safety standards.
- Safely and confidently restrain cats, dogs, and exotic pets.
- Administer vaccines and oral, and injectable medications as directed.
- Communicate with clients via phone, email, and messaging platforms — including follow-up calls, appointment reminders, and general inquiries.
- Empower pet owners through education on preventative care, treatment options, and the value of routine wellness visits.
- Cultivate genuine client relationships built on trust, clear communication, and a consistently positive experience.
Skills
The ideal candidate will bring:
- A strong understanding of safe restraint and animal behavior
- Solid knowledge of animal husbandry, preventative care, vaccination protocols, and diagnostic screening recommendations
- Experience with anesthesia monitoring, dental procedures (including dental radiology, scaling, and polishing), and aseptic surgical preparation
- Confident, skilled animal handling that prioritizes the safety and comfort of patients and team members alike
- Experience in venipuncture, IV catheter placement, and medication administration via subcutaneous, intramuscular, and intravenous routes
- Familiarity with autoclave operation and sterilization of instrument packs, surgical gowns, and drapes
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, a consistently positive attitude, and reliable punctuality
- The ability to communicate clearly and empathetically with clients
- A natural ability to anticipate team needs, step in proactively, and keep the day running smoothly
- Comfort staying organized in a busy, fast-paced clinical environment
