The Vice President, Nursing Professional Excellence and Business Operations provides strategic leadership, integration, and oversight of essential nursing operational functions across the health system. The Vice President will champion excellence in clinical practice, workforce optimization, professional development, innovation, and financial stewardship to advance organizational objectives and uphold Magnet-level standards. The incumbent also delivers visible, collaborative leadership mentoring and developing nursing leaders while ensuring that all efforts align with the system's priorities in quality, safety, research, education, and fiscal responsibility.

Responsibilities

  • Core Responsibilities
    • Partners with Chief Nursing Officers (CNOs) and senior leaders across the system to define and execute system nursing operations strategy.
    • Ensures cohesive policies, standardized processes, and best-practice dissemination across Magnet, education, research/innovation, float pool/staffing, and nursing business office functions.
    • Monitors system performance metrics, regulatory readiness, budget adherence, and operational outcomes; lead continuous improvement initiatives.
    • Builds and sustains high-performing teams; provides direct supervision, coaching, succession planning, and leadership development for direct reports.
    • Represent nursing operations in system-level committees, cross-functional initiatives, and external relationships as needed.
  • Magnet Programs
    • Provides system-level leadership for Magnet readiness, application strategy, documentation, and evidence-based practice alignment.
    • Coordinates Magnet-related communication, data collection, outcomes reporting, and site visit preparation across all hospitals.
    • Supports nursing professional practice model development and maintenance to meet credentialing and accreditation expectations.
  • Nursing Education
    • Oversees system nursing orientation, competency programs, clinical advancement pathways, continuing education, and onboarding standardization.
    • Guides academic-practice partnerships, simulation programs, preceptor development, and professional development curricula.
    • Ensures education programs support retention, regulatory compliance, and clinical practice standards.
  • Nursing Research & Innovation
    • Leads strategy to expand nursing research, quality scholarship, innovation adoption, and dissemination of outcomes across the system.
    • Supports investigator development, grant activity coordination, IRB interface, and operational integration of evidence-based innovations.
    • Fosters cross-disciplinary collaboration to translate research into practice and improve patient outcomes.
    • Collaborates with the Yale School of Nursing to foster and grow the academic practice fellowship.
  • Central Staffing Function
    • Oversees centralized float pool operations: recruitment, deployment, competency maintenance, scheduling, and virtual/tele-float models.
    • Optimizes staffing strategies and resource allocation across units and sites to meet patient care needs and reduce reliance on external agency staffing.
    • Implement staffing office functions: centralized scheduling, staffing analytics, escalation protocols, and workforce contingency planning
  • Nursing Business Office
    • Manages system nursing financial operations including budget oversight, resource forecasting, cost control, billing/collections interfaces (as applicable), and productivity analytics.
    • Aligns operational budgeting with staffing models, education/training investments, and programmatic initiatives.
    • Partners with finance to report nursing financial performance and support strategic investment decisions
  • Leadership, Mentoring, & People Development
    • Supervises direct reports (senior leaders of each functional area); establishes clear expectations, performance goals, and development plans.
    • Provides regular coaching, professional development, and leadership training to strengthen bench depth and succession for system nursing leadership.
    • Champions a culture of psychological safety, diversity, equity, inclusion, and professional growth

Qualifications

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor's of Science in Nursing required, Advanced degree in nursing or a closely related field required, with a strong preference for doctoral qualification in nursing.

EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum ten (10) years' progressive nursing leadership experience in a complex academic health system required.
  • Demonstrated experience with Magnet programs, nursing education systems, research/innovation initiatives, centralized staffing/float pool management, and nursing financial oversight strongly preferred.

LICENSURE

  • Active, unencumbered licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) in Connecticut.
