Yakima Valley College seeks an innovative Chemistry Instructor, who is active and accomplished in their discipline, who has a record of successful teaching or related experience, and who is committed to community college students and their success.

This is a full-time, special faculty (non-tenure track) position, with an anticipated start date of Fall Quarter of the 26-27 academic year. YVC is hiring for 2 locations. One position will be based on the Yakima Campus and one position will be based on the Grandview Campus. Reporting to the Dean of Arts and Sciences, the Chemistry Instructor will demonstrate they have actively experimented with or are professionally interested in interventions and strategies designed to close the achievement gaps for underrepresented students. Additionally, we are seeking a candidate with a record as a successful instructor who demonstrates the strong promise of becoming a contributing member of the Arts and Sciences Division.

YVC offers opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration, encourages cooperative learning and use of technologies in the classroom and for e-learning. All faculty are engaged in the assessment of college goals and purposes.

Essential Tasks

  • Teach GOB sequence for nursing, agriculture, dental hygiene, et al. students.
  • Teach Introductory Chemistry.
  • Teach the 3-quarter General Chemistry sequence for science majors.
  • Teach organic chemistry lecture and lab for the STEM Pathway.
  • Effectively advise students considering a major in physical science or a medical field.
  • Hold at least 5 office hours per week in modalities appropriate for the courses taught (e.g., online office hours for online classes).
  • Maintain current knowledge of academic opportunities, transfer pathways and agreements in the field of science in order to accurately advise students.
  • Help students effectively use computers to study Chemistry and collect, analyze, and report laboratory data.
  • Use effective classroom methodologies to teach to a variety of students.
  • Participate in outcomes assessment of student learning and program effectiveness.
  • Effectively interact with colleagues, staff, students, administrators, and others of various cultural and socio-economic backgrounds and ability
  • Place primary emphasis on student learning in the design, delivery, and evaluation of courses.
  • Use strong interpersonal communication skills for effectively working and interacting with colleagues, staff, students, administrators and others of various cultural and socio-economic backgrounds, and ability to communicate effectively in a multicultural setting.
  • Demonstrate the ability to use written and oral communication in the classroom and with other professionals.
  • Display strong commitment to the mission and values of community college education.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Earned master’s degree in chemistry or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Successful experience working with culturally and ethnically diverse populations in education and in the local communities.
  • Commitment to the community college mission and values.
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion in a multicultural setting, and a commitment to advancing the participation of diverse groups and supporting diverse perspectives.
DESIREABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience teaching within a community college system.
  • Experience developing curriculum (lecture and laboratory).
  • Experience with and willingness to incorporate a variety of teaching modalities.
  • Experience leading efforts to increase student success in Chemistry, including teaching diverse populations and reducing achievement gaps.
  • Experience or evidence of willingness to work in a participatory collegiate community (e.g., committees, advising, college activities).
  • Demonstrated ability to adopt teaching methods/styles that support successful learning appropriate to the student population at Yakima Valley College.
  • Experience using computers and instruments in a student laboratory setting.
  • Experience with Vernier software and probes.
  • Experience with or willingness to integrate environmentally conscious practices in the laboratory setting.
  • Demonstrated willingness to lead student research projects during the academic year and/or summer using available instrumentation (FT-IR, GC, UV-Vis).
  • Commitment to the community college philosophy.
