Staff Accountant — Part-Time (~30 hours/week) | Benton Harbor, MI | $36–$40/hour
Up to $10,000 per year toward individual health coverage. Primarily on-site. Daily start and stop times are highly flexible.
This is not a bookkeeper job. We are a small, growing company that sells Christmas décor and lighting through major retailers (Menards, Ace, Do It Best, Orgill) and online (Amazon, Wayfair, Home Depot, and our own site). Our current bookkeeper is retiring. We want a staff accountant who can own the books, explain the numbers, and help us get better — not someone whose experience is data entry only.
Typical weeks are about 30 hours, year-round. The work is primarily on-site in Benton Harbor, with some flexibility. You choose start and stop times most of the year. August–December is our busy season; extra hours then are paid.
Corporate staff-accounting experience (Whirlpool, LECO, CFS, or similar) is a strong fit if you want fewer hours, more variety, and a seat next to the owners.
What you will do
- Own full-cycle accounting in QuickBooks: GL, AP, AR, invoicing, reconciliations, and month-end close.
- Keep the books current and ready for tax prep and owner questions.
- Prepare monthly financials with a short highlights memo on changes and trends.
- Handle cash planning and cash forecasting.
- Maintain ongoing financial forecasts — a rolling outlook, not a once-a-year file.
- Complete an annual profit-and-loss review by customer / major account.
- Analyze importation and landed costs (product, freight, duties) and what they do to margin.
- Over time, help build online sales reporting, especially Amazon.
- Use emerging AI tools to streamline routine QuickBooks work, with human review before anything posts.
- Coordinate as needed with the warehouse and retailers. Order admin and light office support are part of a small company — they are not the core of the job.
- Work with our outgoing retiring bookkeeper, who will be available to consult through the following summer.
Who we want
- 3–5 years of accounting experience. Corporate or multi-entity staff accounting strongly preferred. Bachelors in accounting or finance.
- You have closed a month and can explain the results. Bookkeeping-only experience will not meet the requirement.
- QuickBooks (or a close system you can convert from quickly) and strong Excel.
- Interest in cash management, customer profitability, costs, and forecasts — not only transactions.
- Interest in using AI tools to cut routine work.
- Local to Benton Harbor, St. Joseph, Stevensville, Niles, or nearby. This role is primarily on-site.
