The Yard Driver is responsible for the safe and efficient movement of trailers within the distribution yard. Key Responsibilities:
- Safely operate a yard tractor (spotter truck) to move trailers to and from dock doors and designated yard locations
- Perform daily equipment inspections and report maintenance or safety issues promptly
- Maintain accurate records of trailer locations using yard management systems (YMS) or manual logs
- Coordinate with warehouse, dispatch, and transportation teams to prioritize trailer moves
- Ensure trailers are properly secured, including wheel chocks, landing gear, and trailer locks
- Monitor yard conditions to ensure a safe, clean, and organized environment
- Verify trailer numbers, seal integrity, and load status as required
- Assist with basic yard audits and inventory tracking of trailers and containers
- Adhere to all company safety policies, OSHA guidelines, and DOT regulations
- Respond to changing operational needs, including peak volume periods and weather conditions
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred
- Previous yard driver, CDL, or commercial driving experience preferred
- Valid driver’s license required; CDL may be required depending on operation
- Ability to operate yard tractor and back trailers safely in tight spaces
- Strong attention to detail and situational awareness
- Basic computer skills or experience with warehouse/yard management systems
- Ability to communicate effectively with team members and supervisors
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods
- Frequent climbing in and out of yard tractor
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs occasionally
Work Environment:
- Fast-paced distribution yard with frequent vehicle and equipment movement
- Exposure to weather elements (heat, cold, rain, etc.)
- May require night, weekend, or holiday shifts depending on business needs
Preferred Skills:
- Experience in a 3PL or high-volume distribution center
- Familiarity with safety protocols and yard management systems (YMS)
- Strong time management and ability to prioritize tasks
