The maintenance trainee may work in unoccupied and occupied apartment units and have frequent, direct contact with residents, other maintenance personnel and administrative staff. This position will be responsible for projecting a positive, professional attitude and demeanor at all times during such contacts. The incumbent must work effectively as part of a team, accept supervision respectfully and politely while promoting goodwill among both authority employees, residents and in the community at large ina style aligned with the objectives and values of the Rockford Housing Authority.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Perform general cleaning duties in RHA offices, restrooms, common areas and preparing vacant units for management.
- Perform general grounds duties on a daily basis and as directed.
- Perform general maintenance work such as, but not limited to, minor electrical (not to exceed 120v), plumbing, carpentry, and appliance and hardware repairs.
- Clear snow and ice from building and sidewalks by shoveling, salting or sanding. May be assigned to operate motorized equipment.
- Assist management with inspections of property.
- Assist RHA staff and contractors with moving heavy objects such as appliances, furniture, materials and equipment.
- Able to read with understanding when completing various assigned tasks.
- Able to be contacted and respond in the event of after-hours emergencies.
Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED AT TIME OF APPLICATION:
- High school diploma or equivalent with a minimum of one (1) year of successful related work experience in building and property maintenance (preferred)
- May be required to lift heavy objects.
- Must have working knowledge of hand and power tools.
- Must have basic knowledge of plumbing, electricity, carpentry and hardware with the ability to learn how to complete minor repairs.
- Must have basic knowledge of materials, equipment and methods required for building and grounds maintenance.
- Must be able to prepare simple reports and record-keeping tasks.
- Must be able to work independently and under varied amounts of supervision.
- Must be able to work with a diverse public.
- Must have basic knowledge of electronic devices to include but not limited to smartphones, iPads, laptops and desktops.
- Must have basic knowledge of computer software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, etc.
- Must possess a valid Illinois driver's license, be insurable by RHA and able to provide personal transportation as needed to perform duties (reimbursement will be made per RHA Travel Policy). A copy of current driver's license and personal vehicle liability insurance (if operating a personal vehicle while on RHA business) must be on file in Human Resources.
