School Nurse
Position Summary: This position reports directly to the Principal. The School Nurse helps to support the school’s mission and vision. The Nurse distributes medications; monitors health issues with individual students; is available to students regarding health and injury issues; maintains communication with parents/guardians regarding student health issues; collects and records immunization data as mandated by the State of Arizona and the Diocese of Phoenix; adheres to Child Protective Services’ policies and procedures; works with other school personnel, e.g., the school counselor, the homeroom teacher, regarding student physical, emotional or mental health issues; is available to staff, during the normal workday, for minor health issues/accidents/injuries; completes all injury reports for accidents that occur on campus; arranges vision and hearing screenings for students; participates in the school-wide safety/security/crisis plans; records student attendance and tardiness.

Duties of the Job (Major and Minor Tasks):
Responsible for: Administering to students regarding health and safety issues; communicating student health issues to parents/guardians/staff; maintaining confidentiality of student, staff or family concerns; distributing medications prescribed by a physician; documenting medication distribution, student health visits and parent inquiries; maintaining health records for current Arizona immunization requirements; complying with Child Protective Services’ protocol; recording and entering students’ daily attendance and tardiness; alerting the Principal when she or he will be absent or tardy, and if absent, helping to arrange for a substitute nurse.
Job Knowledge: Must know the medical knowledge and have the experience to treat or refer students or staff with health concerns; must be able to differentiate when to treat or to refer a student or staff member to a physician or to urgent care; must be knowledgeable of CDC (Center for Disease Control) protocol for clean-up of bodily fluids; must be thoroughly knowledgeable of Child Protective Services’ policies and procedures; must remain current with Arizona state laws governing immunization and records, communicable diseases and quarantine.
Mental/Physical Demands: Must be able to handle frequent interruptions, multiple patients, and parent and staff phone calls that may occur simultaneously; has sufficient physical stamina to meet the daily needs of the student body.
Education: Must be an Arizona certified registered nurse; in addition, school nurse certification is preferable but not required.
Additional Information
This is a full-time, salaried position. It may be a 10, 11 or 12 month position, depending upon the school’s needs. The School Nurse is expected to be present and available to students and parents from approximately 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily, or this can be altered upon the Principal’s approval. Namely, the school nurse should be available during the instructional day for students and when they first begin arriving to when the office closes.

- Supports and helps to implement the vision, mission and philosophy of the school.
- Participates in any staff meetings and/or professional development activities that directly relate to educating staff, students, and parents on health issues, safety/crisis issues, or in enhancing the Nurse’s job knowledge and performance.
- Maintains communication with parents/guardians regarding individual student health issues through phone calls, notices, letters, the school newsletter, and face-to-face contact.
- Maintains communication with parents/guardians regarding student health issues that may affect the campus community as a group; alerts Principal as to when parent notification will be given and to the contents of this notice.
- Maintains confidentiality regarding students, staff and family health issues; maintains confidentiality of student records, parent phone calls, staff concerns, student attendance, etc.
- Distributes medications as prescribed by the students’ medical professionals.
- Keeps careful record of all students’ visits to the nurse’s office, indicating the nature of the visit, the date and time seen, the actions taken and any follow through given.
- Records daily attendance through a school computer software program.
- Arranges yearly vision and hearing screenings for students.
- Arranges for staff immunizations where applicable.
- Coordinates with the homeroom teachers when they are planning field trips, to ensure student medical needs are met, e.g., first aid kit, student medications, etc.
- Works with staff personnel, for example, the physical education teacher, to offer educational services, trainings to staff and students, as needed.
- Monitors the medical supply inventory and the supply of school uniforms for student emergencies.
- Ensures the nursing and restroom areas are clean and sterile as students come and go throughout the day.
