GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
The role of a school bus driver is vital in ensuring the safe transportation of students to and from school, as well as to various educational and extracurricular activities. School bus drivers are responsible for operating school buses following designated schedules, adhering to traffic laws and safety regulations, and maintaining a safe and orderly environment for students during transit.
SPECIFIC JOB SKILLS, EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
- Valid commercial driver's license (CDL) with appropriate endorsements for operating a school bus
- Clean driving record with no history of traffic violations or accidents
- Ability to pass a background check, drug screening, and physical examination
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with students, parents, and school personnel
- Knowledge of safety regulations and procedures related to school bus transportation
- Physical stamina and agility to safely operate a bus and assist students as needed
- Flexibility and reliability to adapt to changing schedules and situations
- Commitment to upholding the highest standards of safety and professionalism in student transportation
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Safely Operate School Bus
- Drive school bus along designated routes, ensuring adherence to specific schedules and pick-up/drop-off locations
- Operate the bus safely in various weather and road conditions, exercising caution and following traffic laws at all times
- Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the bus to ensure it is in proper working condition, reporting any maintenance issues promptly
- Ensure Student Safety
- Ensure the safety and well-being of students during transit, maintaining discipline and order on the bus
- Assist students in safely boarding and exiting the bus, especially younger or special needs students
- Enforce safety rules and regulations, such as seat belt usage and appropriate behavior, to prevent accidents and maintain a secure environment
- Maintain Communication
- Communicate effectively with school administrators and transportation officials regarding schedules, and any incidents or delays
- Provide assistance and support to students as needed, addressing concerns or issues raised during transit
- Uphold Professionalism
- Maintain a courteous and professional demeanor when interacting with students, parents, and school staff
- Serve as a positive role model for students, demonstrating respect, patience, and responsible behavior at all times
- Ensure Compliance
- Adhere to all federal, state, and local regulations governing school bus operation and student transportation
- Participate in training sessions and professional development activities to enhance knowledge of safety procedures and best practices

JOB SCOPE:
Position encounters variations in work situations. Incumbent operates under general directions and instructions, performing with moderate to little supervision.
COMMUNICATION/CLIENT CONTACT:
Contacts are normally made inside and outside the school.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, talk, reach, sit, hear, handle and perform repetitive motions of the hands/wrists. Lifts and moves items up to 20 pounds.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
Work is largely performed within the confines of the bus and/or through transportation.
