What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior Embedded Software Engineer position at X4 Technology?
Senior Embedded Software Engineer (Wireless & Hardware Systems) – Permanent
About the Company
A confidential, well-established product design and engineering consultancy is seeking an experienced Embedded Software Engineer to join its team on a permanent basis. The organisation delivers end-to-end product development services, turning complex ideas into fully engineered, production-ready solutions across embedded systems, electrical, mechanical, and software disciplines.
Projects span connected devices, IoT systems, and low-power embedded products where hardware and firmware are tightly integrated. Engineers work in multidisciplinary teams focused on building real-world, manufacturable solutions.
The Role
We are looking for a mid-to-senior Embedded Software Engineer to design, develop, and support firmware for low-power, connected embedded systems.
This role is ideal for engineers who enjoy working across both firmware and hardware-adjacent development, including close collaboration with electrical and hardware teams.
We are especially interested in candidates with experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Wireless / connectivity development (Bluetooth / BLE, Wi-Fi, Zigbee, cellular IoT)
- Hardware development or strong hardware collaboration experience
- Schematic review and understanding of electronic designs
- PCB design exposure or hands-on PCB development experience
- Battery-powered and low-power system design and optimisation
You will be embedded in a team working across full product lifecycles—from early design through to prototype, validation, and production support.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain embedded firmware in C/C for microcontroller-based systems
- Design firmware for low-power, battery-operated devices
- Work with hardware interfaces including I²C, SPI, UART, CAN, GPIO, and ADC
- Read and interpret schematics and component datasheets or Implement and support wireless communication features (BLE and other IoT protocols)
- Support debugging and validation using lab equipment such as oscilloscopes and logic analysers
- Collaborate closely with hardware, electrical, and systems engineers
- Contribute to firmware optimisation, verification, and system-level performance improvements
Required Experience
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related discipline
- 7 years of embedded systems experience
- Strong proficiency in embedded C/C
- Experience with microcontrollers (e.g. ARM STM32, NXP, AVR, PIC, DSP platforms)
- Experience developing bare-metal and/or RTOS-based firmware
- Experience working with low-power embedded and battery-operated systems
- Ability to work effectively in hardware-facing engineering environments
Preferred Experience
- Exposure to PCB design tools and workflows
- Strong understanding of Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and IoT connectivity
- Ability to read and interpret schematics at system level
- Experience with battery systems, power management, or energy optimisation
- Familiarity with Silicon Labs BG22 or similar platforms
- Experience working in client-facing or consultancy-style engineering environments
- Ability to contribute to system architecture and design decisions
Location & Engagement
- Permanent with Industry leading benefits and a 9/80 schedule
- Majority onsite working model in Long Island, NY area
- Some flexibility depending on project requirements
- Potential for long-term engagement based on performance and project needs
What’s on Offer
- Competitive W2 compensation aligned with experience
- Exposure to complex, real-world embedded product development
- Cross-disciplinary engineering environment (hardware, firmware, systems)
- Opportunity to work on full lifecycle product development
- Flexible working structure (including 9/80 schedule where applicable)
- Collaborative, engineering-driven culture focused on innovation
Why This Role
This is a hands-on embedded engineering role where firmware meets hardware. You’ll be working on complete systems—not isolated software components—contributing directly to how connected, low-power products are designed and brought to life.
Equal Opportunity
The employer is committed to building a diverse and inclusive engineering team and considers all qualified applicants without regard to protected characteristics.
Salary : $160,000 - $200,000
