Position Summary:
Under direct supervision, perform duties related to manufacturing and testing specimens to support Wyman-Gordon and customer requirements according to departmental work instructions. These duties include procuring, storing, retrieving, and shipping test material; operating fork-lift truck; maintaining test material records; dispositioning and scrapping test material; obtaining blueprints, test plans, and testing requirements from department files and the computer system; interpreting testing instructions to determine correct specimen location and orientation; laying out and marking test material; inspecting, setting up and operating equipment including abrasive saws, identifying specimens; inspecting specimens using measuring instruments such as including brinnell, scales and tape measures and keeping work area clean and orderly.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
- Obtain job assignments from lead, supervisor or manager.
- Work safely in accordance to plant safety guidelines including cardinal rules of safety.
- Adheres to quality processes including in-process inspections to ensure compliance with quality specifications.
- Obtain or receive test material, check serial numbers or other identification, and log in.
- Obtain blueprint, test plan, Lab Test Requirement Sheet, specimen envelopes, and/or other test instructions from files and/or computer system. Ensure that instructions are the correct revision before proceeding.
- Mark test material for cutting.
- Inspect, set up, and operate cutting equipment. Report equipment malfunctions on checklist to lead, supervisor, or manager.
- Identify specimens and remnants as required.
- Perform measurements and computer entries as required.
- File test instructions and store remnant test material.
- Store tested specimens.
- Retrieve remnant test material and/or specimens for retesting or to ship to customer per requirements.
- Disposition or scrap stored test specimens and remnant material per requirements.
- Maintain equipment and work area in a clean and orderly condition.
- Perform daily housekeeping / 6S activities as required.
- Perform other duties as requested by lead, supervisor or manager.
Required Skills:
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, sketches, and process sheets.
- Use and interpret measuring equipment
- Working knowledge of shop mathematics
- Use of judgment and ability to plan and make decisions concerning set-up, operations and process of cutting requirements on more than one piece of equipment simultaneously. Requires decisions as to quality and tolerances within department control standards.
- Exercise considerable care in operation of abrasive cutting machines and equipment to prevent damage where repair costs would be large
- Meet the minimal required score on the required internal assessments
- US Citizenship or Permanent Residency is required due to government military contracts.
Experience & Education
- High school diploma or GED
- 0 to 1 year of manufacturing experience; prior military experience; or technical certification / degree required
Working Conditions:
- Constant exposure to indoor manufacturing environment
- Constant exposure to moderate noise
- Working conditions may include small spaces, dust, fumes, odors, hot / cold temperatures, inside / outside noise vibration, standing on concrete for long hours and wet or uneven surfaces.
- Must be able to work any shift including overtime, weekends and holidays if scheduled.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to lift and carry items weighing up to thirty-five (35) pounds on a repetitive basis.
- Must be able to stand, walk, bend, squat, climb, kneel, twist and work at heights on an intermittent basis for up to twelve (12) hours.
- Requires hand manipulation including simple grasping, pushing and pulling of materials.
- Must be able to safety operate an overhead crane.
- Must be able to reach and work above and below the shoulder level.
- Must be able to work with and around forklifts and hazardous machinery.
- Must be able to wear all required Personal Protective Equipment.
- Visual acuity skill to detect any flaws in the parts being inspected.
