Additional Job Description:

POSITION SUMMARY:The Advance Practice Professional (APP) is an individual with clinical and medical skills, andexpertisein the care of orthopedic, hand & upper extremitypatients. The APP completes comprehensive patient health evaluations (including biological,socialand psychological assessments),taking into accountthe patient's co-morbid conditions and overall disposition in collaboration with theappropriate clinical/facultyteam. The APP assesses and coordinates the educational and psychosocial needs of the patient and caretakers. The APP develops and reviews the plan of care with the other members of the clinical team,participatesin directing that care, and coordinates discharge planning/and or follow-up (as applicable). The APPparticipatesin the education of residents and medical/nursing students and performs diagnostic procedures and therapeutic procedures.

Provide healthcare services consistent with state law and the requirements of the professional licensing or certification authority and/or hospital privileges, where applicable.Suchservicemayinclude, butare not limited to.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1.

Bachelor's Degreeas Physician Assistant, orMaster's Degreeas Physician Assistantrequired.

2.

Graduate of an ARC-PA approved Physician Assistant (PA) training programrequired.

3.

Certification by the National Commission for Certification of Physician Assistantsrequired.

4.

Must be licensed or eligible for licensure by the WV Board of Medicineor WVBoard of Osteopathic Medicine.

5.

BLS Certification required with additional Advanced Life Support training at the discretion of the department.

6.

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) at the discretion of the department.

EXPERIENCE:

1.

Eligibleand talentednew graduates will be considered.

Master's leveldegree as Physician Assistantpreferred.

EDUCATION:

Orthopedic,surgicalor acute careexperience preferred.

Manages comprehensive and individualized care for orthopedic patients and their families in the inpatient phase of hospitalization(as applicable)andinthe ambulatory setting.

2.

Participates inperi-operative management of patients including (but not limited to) first assisting in the operative suite.

3.

Completes daily rounds; consults and/or pre-procedure/evaluations (as applicable).Provides both urgent and chronic management of Orthopedic patients in the ambulatory setting.

4.

Completes integrated assessments.

5.

With the collaboration of orthopedic faculty or by following established clinical Guidelines and Protocols,ordersadditionaltests or consults asdeemedappropriate.

6.

Performs and communicates results of diagnostic tests following established clinical guidelines and scope of practice.

7.

Consults and communicates with clinic and hospital staffregardingabnormal findings in the evaluations of patients.

8.

Performs succinct comprehensive clinical evaluations and documents findings in medicalrecord.

9.

Facilitates patient dischargeand/or follow-upby coordinatingappropriate servicesand tests necessary for outpatient follow-up appointments in the clinic (as applicable).

10.

Develops a comprehensive individualized plan of care for orthopedic patients, which includesteaching,perioperativeplanning. discharge planningand necessary referral to other members of the health careteamas necessary.

11.

Demonstratesexpertisein caring for patients across theagecontinuum of their educational experience and certification.

12.

Identifiesunstable or complex orthopedic patient care situations andfacilitatesappropriate interventionin the clinic and/or hospital setting.

13.

Recognizesemergency situations andinitiateseffective emergency care.

14.

Evaluates orthopedic patients and serves as a coordinator for follow up procedures and tests in the ambulatory setting (as applicable).

15.

Assistsin the collection of outcome measures (as applicable).

16.

Demonstrates critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning skills in clinical decision making by the identification,evaluationand management of the individual needs of patients/families.

17.

Demonstrates the ability to utilize equipment in a safe manner.

18.

Bases decisions made/actions taken on the relevant scientific principles,establishedstandards of care and/or research findings.

19.

Utilizes teaching/learning theory and appropriate teaching strategies in the provision of education to nursing staff, hospital staff, students, patients,familiesand the community.

20.

Promotes an environment thatfacilitateslearning by responding toappropriate patient/familypreferences,prioritiesand readiness to learn.

21.

Updates own knowledge base throughout the year.

22.

Completes all identified clinical competencies.

23.

Serves as a resource person for staff caring for the orthopedic patient.

24.

Provides educational programs to professional and paraprofessional personnel inareaof expertise.

25.

Participates in community programs, distribution of literature, asappropriate inarea of expertise.

26.

Documents the plan of care,interventionsand evaluations in a clear and concise manner for every patient visit in the patient's medical record following approved hospital/UHA policies and compliance standards for documentation.

27.

Collaborates with other leaders and staff to effectively achieve patientoutcome basedimprovements in care.

28.

Provides leadership in the development and implantation of changes in the orthopedic practice that positivelyimpactpatient outcomes.

29.

Works collaboratively with medical and nursing staff tofacilitatecreative problem solving and provide professional support.

30.

Participates andinitiatesinter-disciplinary approaches to patient care, programdevelopmentand education.Serves as a professional role model.

31.

Promotes and practices innovation of the expanded role in the delivery of care to orthopedic patients and families throughout inpatient hospitalization,perioperativephaseand the ambulatory setting.

32.

Participates and provides leadership for committees and task forces.

33.

Documents hours andsubmitsbilling reports, as appropriate.

34.

Reviews and interprets orthopedic data from sources such as patient registries, clinical and financial reports, length of stay, access to care, and cost per case reports and recommends/implementschangesas necessary.

35.

Participates in clinical trials and research studies with the Principal Investigator.

36.

Assistsorthopedic Faculty, Administrators and Directors in the collection of outcome measures.

37.

Other duties/projects as assigned.
