The Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources at West Virginia University seeks applications and nominations for a Teaching Assistant Professor in the field of Computer Science and Cybersecurity. The appointment shall be in the Lane Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering. The general area of interest for this search is programming, data structures and algorithms, operating systems, databases, computer networks, software engineering, theory of computation, compiler design, computer organization, cybersecurity fundamentals, cryptography, ethical hacking, penetration testing, cyber defense, computer incidence response, and hands-on exercise for cybersecurity competitions. Expertise in hands-on lab support, including virtual machines, sandbox environments, cyber-range, simulation tools, and secure network setups to provide students with practical experience is critical for this position.

West Virginia University is a comprehensive Land Grant University with a Carnegie Classification of Highest Research Activity (i.e., R1 University). The Statler College is growing and currently has seven academic departments, over $51M in annual research expenditures. The Lane Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering has 30 faculty members and approximately 700 undergraduate and 120 graduate students.

The successful candidate will greatly benefit from the resources offered by the Lane Department, Statler College, the industry partners and other collaborators. WVU is a National Center of Academic Excellence (NCAE) in Cyber Defense Research (CAE-R) and the B.S. in cybersecurity program is a NCAE in Cyber Defense Education (CAE-CDE) designated by the National Security Agency (NSA) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). WVU is member of US CYBERCOMMAND Academic Engagement Network and AFRL information institute, providing an opportunity to provide enriching experience to students.

The Lane Department offers online M.S. programs in Software Engineering and M.S. in AI, and it plans to offer an online M.S. program in Cybersecurity. The software engineering program is one of the top ranked online M.S. programs in the Nation having begun in 1996 to meet regional technology industry demand but has now grown to meet the software development professional’s demand for an advanced software engineering education across the nation. The Department also offers a graduate area of emphasis in a) Artificial Intelligence and Computational Data Science, b) Cyber-Physical and Complex Systems, c) Cybersecurity and Networked Systems, d) Microelectronics and Embedded Systems, and certificate in digital health. Lane Department is also host to a center and National Science Foundation Research Traineeship (NRT) Program focusing on AI Health, collaborating with WVU Health Science campus. The College enjoys strong external support from the Leidos, KeyLogic, Amazon AWS, TMC Technologies of WV, FBI, Oracle National Security Group, Microsoft, EMERSON Automation Solutions, IDEMIA National Security Solutions, and Northrup Grumman Corp. Qualifications

We seek a dynamic faculty member with outstanding technical expertise and a proven, ongoing track record of teaching experience or potential to develop graduate level courses for in-class and online learning management systems (LMS) platforms such as Blackboard, and Coursera. We welcome candidates that have equivalent experience in the private sector or national laboratories/institutes. The successful applicant must hold a Ph.D. degree in computer science, cybersecurity or a closely related field by the time of hire.
