Position Overview:
A Retail Shipping Associate's responsibility is to assist customers in transacting their business.

General Job Duties

The general job duties of an employee of WV Box and Ship include the following

1. Customer facing. You have to deal with customers. They need packages shipped, and your job is to enter the information into the computer, tell them their shipping options, answer their shipping questions, and ring up the order.

2. Packing Items. People will come in with items that need packaged for shipment. We have boxes, peanuts, and bubble wrap. We teach you the basics of packing, but the rest you just gotta figure out. People bring in weird things that need packaged, and it can be like a puzzle to figure out.

3. Helping people with things. Helping people to use their phone to email a document, helping them to fill out paperwork, opening doors, etc. are all pretty routine parts of the job.

4. Answering phones. Answering questions, giving directions, etc.

5. Moving boxes around. The boxes can be heavy, light, short, tall, fat, small, or big. Most are smaller and manageable, but sometimes there are heavier ones. Usually the customer helps with heavier ones, and we don’t tend to have anything crazy.

6. Putting mail away. The mail needs sorted, scanned, documented, and put away.

7. Processing of Paperwork. A package is lost or broken in transit and the customer needs a claim filed; a mailbox is opened and the USPS needs all the information entered into their system. When this happens, there is filing of forms, sending of emails, calling customers, etc.

Summary

This is a position that provides an entry way into professional skill building. The job maintains an informal environment, but is focused in that we problem solve for our customers.

General Job Requirements

We are looking for people who will:

1. Learn the job. There is a fair number of things to remember. Different carriers, shipping options, processes, products, forms to file, etc. The ability to learn the different and varied items make the job easier.

2. Be Responsible. It is a local business with a small staff. When emails come in and a task needs completed, you can pretend like you do not see the email, or you can complete the task. You can be the person who ignores the things that need done or be the one who does them.

3. Multi-task. Sometimes multiple people will come at the same time. One person might be sending an email and another needs a package checked in. This might happen at the same time. And then the phone rings. Being able to multi-task will help on this job.

4. Figure things out. People will have an odd-shaped item that will need packed, and you will need to figure out how to pack it. A customer will need a document signed and they need to know where to sign it. You have never seen the document before, but you just need to look at it and figure it out. There is no trick to these things, it’s just figuring them out.

5. Be Organized. When there are several things going on, sorting mail, customers coming in, phones ringing, staying organized is a part of it or you will lose track of what you are doing and where you are.

6. Maintain a Clean Appearance. Neatly kept hair or facial hair, business casual clothing, no abnormal piercings, etc.
