The Yard Inspector is under the direction of the Scale Master and plays a crucial role in the safe, efficient, compliant movement of vehicles, materials, and people within the yard. The Inspector must demonstrate a solid understanding of company policies while maintaining a clean, safe yard and interact professionally and courteously with internal team members, drivers, and customers. Specific responsibilities include oversight of incoming and outgoing traffic as well as loading and unloading activities and assisting the scale master in monitoring material quality. The Inspector actively consults with company leadership to address issues that arise. The Inspector must be able to work efficiently under challenging conditions, ensuring that daily operational goals are met. Individuals must be physically fit - able to stand on their feet for extended periods of time and lift heavy objects. Through thoughtful communication and active management, the position directly contributes to the company's commitment to excellence and safety.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Direct traffic flow including trucks, heavy equipment, and other vehicles, ensuring the safe, efficient offloading of vehicles at the light iron pad and in other appropriate locations in the yard.
- Oversee loading and unloading activities to ensure adherence to safety regulations and the prevention of accidents. Ensure all drivers, customers, and other personnel consistently observe safety protocols.
- Inspect incoming loads to ensure no prohibited materials are present. These materials include fuels, oils, refrigerants, batteries, mercury switches, lead wheel weights, CRTs, closed containers of any kind, PCB containing materials, radioactive materials, asbestos containing materials, trash, concrete, wood, etc.
- Complete inspection reports accurately and on a timely basis.
- Contribute to a clean, safe work environment by monitoring walkways, pathways and driveways. Maintain a clean scale.
- Understand and comply with all inspector training materials, transportation regulations and internal company policies. Operate with integrity and uphold company standards.
- Interact courteously and professionally with drivers, suppliers, customers, and wTe staff. Communicate clearly, addressing issues as they arise. Insure superior customer service and smooth processes; consulting with company leadership when appropriate.
- Operate the scale in the absence of the Scale Operator.
- Demonstrate competency in all aspects of the job. Understand company objectives.

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS
- This is an active, hands-on position that requires physical stamina and the ability to lift and move heavy objects up to 50 lbs. It involves standing, walking, climbing, bending, twisting, reaching and pulling/pushing for extended periods of time.
- Incumbents must be self-motivated, self-directed, and capable of working with minimal supervision. They should also be able to work as part of a team and communicate clearly and effectively with coworkers, customers, suppliers and the general public.
- Must be organized and adaptable with the ability to appropriately prioritize tasks among competing demands. Must become skilled in identifying and resolving issues related to traffic flow, logistics, and safety promptly and correctly.
- Must be able to work safely and follow company policies. Must become familiar with relevant environmental guidelines and consistently operate within those guidelines.
- Must be willing and able to tolerate moderate to loud noise and outdoor temperature extremes, as well as dusty, dirty, and wet conditions.
- Must be able to work variable shifts and work beyond 8 hours/day.
- Must have reliable transportation.
- Previous experience in an industrial environment is helpful but not required.
- A high school diploma or GED is preferred.
