What are the responsibilities and job description for the Choir Director Musician position at Wright’s AME Church?
Wright’s A.M.E. Church is prayerfully seeking a gifted, committed, and spiritually grounded Church Musician/Choir Director to lead and grow our music ministry. This individual will provide musical leadership that enhances worship, supports the preached Word, and helps cultivate a spirit of praise that extends beyond Sunday.
The ideal candidate will be musically skilled, spiritually mature, and aligned with the mission and traditions of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, while also bringing creativity and vision to engage a multigenerational congregation.
Key Responsibilities
Musical Leadership & Worship Support
- Serve as primary musician for Sunday worship services and special services (as scheduled)
- Collaborate with the Pastor to plan and execute worship experiences that are spiritually impactful and culturally resonant
- Provide musical accompaniment (organ, piano, or keyboard) for worship, including hymns, congregational singing, and selections
Choir Direction & Development
- Direct and develop two active choirs:
o Mass Choir (sings 2 Sundays per month)
o Praise Team (sings 2 Sundays per month)
- Schedule and lead weekly rehearsals for both choirs
- Select music that aligns with scripture, sermon themes, and the worship experience
- Recruit, train, and nurture choir members, musicians, and vocalists
Ministry Growth & Administration
- Cultivate a music ministry that supports discipleship, fellowship, and excellence
- Coordinate with the church calendar for special services (Holy Week, Christmas, Revivals, etc.)
- Maintain organization of music, equipment, and rehearsal schedules
- Work collaboratively with media/AV team and other ministry leader
Qualifications
- Demonstrated proficiency in piano, organ, or keyboard (ability to play by ear preferred)
- Experience directing choirs and/or praise teams, preferably in a church setting
- Familiarity with traditional hymns, gospel music, and contemporary worship styles
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
- A clear testimony of faith and a lifestyle consistent with Christian values
- Ability to work effectively with a multigenerational congregation

Compensation
- Compensation is commensurate with experience and qualifications
