Corporate Materials Lab Intern
Location Columbus, OH (on-site)
Worthington Steel is looking to hire a second or third year (Sophomore or Junior) student who can work a minimum of 10 hours per week during the school year and up to 40 hours per week during the summer. Available work hours are Monday-Friday between 700AM and 600PM. Students must be local to Columbus, Ohio throughout the school year.
The Worthington Steel Corporate Materials Laboratory provides advanced technical support to our customers, our suppliers, and our own production facilities. The intern position is in support of a staff of scientists and engineers who perform problem solving, failure analysis, competitive product analysis, and other investigations of flat rolled steel and engineered fabricated-metal products. Equipment utilized in this lab include a scanning electron microscope, various optical microscopes, tensile testing, etc.

General Responsibilities
- Perform safe sample handling and preparation for testing and evaluation
- Sectioning of samples with band saw, precision saw, and various hand tools
- Preparation of metallic cross sections through standard metallography
- Digital photography
- Optical microscopy
- Hardness and microhardness testing
- Tensile testing
- Maintain meticulous sample identification throughout evaluation process
- Cleaning and organization of lab, shop, and office areas
- Willingness to learn and utilize basic machine shop equipment and hand tools
- Ability to follow directions and work independently
- Above average written and verbal communication skills
- Mechanical aptitude
- Prioritizes safety in the workplace
- Highly detail oriented
- Desire to learn
- Students must be local to Columbus and available to work part-time throughout the school year
- Second or third year (Sophomore or Junior) status required
