WWF Legacy Library Intern

World Wildlife Fund (WWF), one of the world's leading conservation organizations, seeks an WWF Legacy Library Intern.

Position Summary

WWF seeks a graduate-level intern with library science expertise to help design a cataloging system and begin organizing books, reports, and archival materials for the new WWF Legacy Library. The intern will apply library science principles and current cataloging practices to record, manage, and classify a wide range of materials-including books, reports, flyers, and brochures-in order to create a library that preserves and showcases WWF's history in ways that are engaging, accessible, and easy for staff to use for reference and inspiration.

The intern will work for the Facilities unit and will coordinate closely with the Legacy Library Committee.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate with the Legacy Library Committee to design and develop a classification system to organize the books, periodicals, and internal documents collected to date reflecting World Wildlife Fund's organizational history.  Prepare a final draft guidance document on the classification system, including user-friendly, clear instructions for the staff volunteers who will be responsible for library upkeep.  Present the draft system to the Legacy Library Committee and WWF leadership for final approval.
• Once approved, design and implement an efficient procedure for using the classification system to process library holdings, currently a mix of shelved and boxed books and other materials. The Legacy Library Committee will enlist volunteers to assist as needed.
• Draft recommendations for ongoing library acquisition, management, and lending procedures following the classification system above and submit to the Legacy Library Committee as a final report for the internship.

Learning Outcomes 

The intern will gain experience assessing materials, making descriptive decisions, organizing library space efficiently, and adapting library science principles and best practices to design the classification system, catalogue, and library procedures for a large non-profit organization.

Minimum Requirements:

• Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from an American Library Association-accredited Master of Library Science or Master of Library and Information Science program with an interest in wildlife conservation, earth sciences, or related field.
• Able to apply library science principles and advancements in recording, managing, and cataloguing books, reports, flyers, brochures, etc. to build a library that stores and represents WWF's history in appealing, accessible and understandable way for staff to use for reference and inspiration.
• Strong organizational skills
• High attention to detail and accuracy
• Ability to stay organized and manage time effectively
• Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and in a team setting
