Middle School Teacher Job Description

World Community Education Center (WCEC) is seeking an energetic and dedicated, multi-disciplinary teacher to join our growing school starting August 2023. Candidates must have some experience teaching or tutoring math and science.

WCEC is an alternative, Montessori based independent school, with small class sizes in a unique natural environment, currently serving a community of approximately 30 students (K-12).

The middle school teacher will work with a two dynamic groups of students, one group of ~4 students, ages 11 &12, and second group of ~8 students, ages 12 &13. The instructor will teach age appropriate science and mathematics in a hands-on and engaging way and should be passionate about the sciences and the practical application of learning. Qualified candidates may also be offered additional hours teaching English, social studies, or other elective subjects.

Specific responsibilities include:

· Planning and implementing the middle school math and science program, in consultation with school administration;

· Create lesson plans; evaluate student performances; prepare grades and reports

· Teach using project-based and hands-on learning experiences

· Supporting students and tailor instruction to student needs

· Communicate with parents regarding student progress,

· Organize and supporting a variety of student-led and hands-on projects and field-trips.

Teaching schedule: 3 to 5 days/week for a total of between 13 and 32 hours/week (details to be refined based on candidates’ expertise and availability, and student enrollment and schedule).

The ideal candidate will have Bachelor's or Master's Degree; enthusiasm for project-based learning; teaching experience, experience in a Montessori classroom, preferably with a diverse group of students; knowledge/experience in STEM fields and excellent communication skills; the ability to work in a team; a love for the outdoors; and a passion for working with adolescents.

The World Community Education Center is an independent, non-profit Montessori school located in southern Virginia, in the beautiful foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Established in 1975, World Community Education Center has a proven record of academic excellence, learning through service, and emphasis on universal spiritual values. Our campus is located on an 80-acre community property with trails, stream, pond, a large organic garden, farm animals, and wildlife. Students and teachers are encouraged to explore and utilize the natural environment as a learning space. Our teachers enjoy a supportive faculty community, well equipped classrooms, and support for continuing education.

SCHEDULE​: This is a 10-month position, beginning August 2023. Schedule to be determined by course load.Ability to support school functions, which occasionally occur on evenings and weekends, is a plus. Compensation to be determined based on experience/ability.
