Mechanic II – Fleet & Equipment Maintenance

Reports To: Maintenance Supervisor / COO

Position Overview

Work Training Center (WTC) is seeking a skilled and motivated Mechanic II to join our growing team. This position is ideal for a mid-level mechanic who brings both strong technical expertise and excellent communication skills, and who is looking for a long-term opportunity to settle, grow, and take on increasing responsibility over time.

In this role, you will be responsible for maintaining and repairing WTC’s internal fleet, which includes a diverse mix of vehicles, trailers, and equipment. Beyond hands-on mechanical work, you will play an important role in documenting service activities, managing parts and supplies, and supporting the continued growth of WTC’s transportation services.

As WTC expands its fleet services to support smaller community organizations with similar needs, this position is expected to grow into a supervisory role, overseeing a lower-level mechanic and helping guide fleet operations as demand increases.

Essential Job Functions

· Perform routine and preventative maintenance on a variety of vehicles, trailers, and equipment

· Diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and fuel system issues and complete repairs efficiently and safely

· Maintain accurate vehicle service records using fleet management or maintenance software

· Track maintenance schedules and ensure compliance with safety and operational standards

· Order parts, tools, and supplies; manage inventory to ensure adequate stock levels

· Communicate clearly with staff regarding vehicle status, repair timelines, and maintenance needs

· Respond to urgent or unexpected fleet issues as they arise

· Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment

· Assist in developing preventative maintenance plans and best practices

· Collaborate with facilities and operations staff to support broader organizational needs

· Support future growth of fleet services, including servicing external community vehicles as the program expands

Required Skills & Qualifications

· 3–5 years of hands-on experience as a mechanic (automotive, fleet, diesel, or equipment maintenance)

· Certifications such as ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) or equivalent (or willing to obtain)

· Strong mechanical aptitude across multiple vehicle and equipment types

· Ability to diagnose and repair complex mechanical issues independently

· Comfortable using computers, tablets, and maintenance software for documentation and parts ordering

· Strong communication skills, both verbal and written

· Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively in a dynamic environment

· Valid driver’s license; ability to operate various fleet vehicles. Commercial Driver’s License is a plus.

· Commitment to safety, reliability, and quality workmanship

· Clean Driving Record: 5 years

· Must be able to pass Pre-Employment Drug Screening and willingness to maintain continued enrollment in a random drug testing program.

Preferred Skills & Qualifications

· Experience working with mixed fleets (vans, buses, trailers, light- to medium-duty vehicles, equipment)

· Experience with automotive A/C system diagnostics and repair

· Ability to perform tire mounting, balancing, and related tire service

· Experience diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing wheelchair lifts and accessibility equipment

· Familiarity with fleet management or CMMS software

· Prior experience with inventory management or parts procurement

· Welding and fabrication skills is a plus

· Supervisory or lead mechanic experience, or interest in mentoring others

· Experience working in nonprofit, municipal, or service-oriented environments
