The Assistant HVAC Service Technician is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining residential HVAC systems while delivering a high-quality customer experience. This role ensures work is completed safely, efficiently, and to company standards, while identifying opportunities to improve system performance and customer outcomes.
Technicians are the front line of the customer experience, representing both technical expertise and the Asheville Oil Company family of brands, including the Smoky Mountain Heating & Air brand in every interaction.

Duties and Responsibilities
1. Service, Maintenance & Repair
- Diagnose and repair residential HVAC systems (heating, cooling, ventilation)
- Perform preventative maintenance, tune-ups, and system inspections
- Assist HVAC Service Technician and Lead HVAC Service Technician with large repairs and unit replacement jobs
- Ensure all work meets safety, code, and company standards
- Complete jobs efficiently while maintaining quality
2. Customer Communication & Experience
- Explain system issues, recommendations, and options clearly to customers
- Provide professional, courteous, and respectful service in all interactions
- Answer customer questions and build trust through expertise
- Represent Smoky Mountain Heating & Air positively in every home and job site
3. Opportunity Identification & Revenue Support
- Identify repair, replacement, bundle or upgrade opportunities
- Communicate findings clearly to customers and/or office team
- Support the quote generation by the Lead HVAC technician and follow-up on recommendations
- Identify opportunities to build loyalty with related services i.e. fuel and/or propane delivery
4. Documentation & Job Completion
- Accurately document work performed, parts used, and system condition
- Complete service tickets and required documentation in a timely manner
- Ensure proper communication with dispatch and office team
5. Parts & Inventory Use
- Maintain truck stock and ensure proper use of parts
- Communicate parts and/or tool needs to ensure readiness for future jobs
- Minimize return trips through preparation and planning
6. Safety & Compliance
- Follow all safety procedures and company protocols
- Maintain required safety and equipment certifications and licenses
- Ensure proper handling of equipment and materials
Required Qualifications
- Enrolled in (or completed) basic HVAC training program
- Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills
- EPA certification required
- Valid driver’s license with clean driving record
- Strong communication and customer service skills
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work in varying environmental conditions, including heat, cold, humidity, and outdoor weather
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl for extended periods, including in spaces such as attics and crawlspaces
- Ability to safely lift, carry, push, or pull equipment and materials up to 50–75 lbs regularly, and more with assistance
- Ability to use hands and tools with precision, including reaching overhead and working in awkward positions
- Ability to safely operate company vehicles and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) as needed
