Assistant Director of School Nutrition Assistant Director of School Nutrition is responsible for leading and managing all aspects of compliance with all federal (USDA) and state (DESE) regulations governing the National School Lunch Program (NSLP), School Breakfast Program (SBP), Child and Adult Care Feeding Program (CACFP), and Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP) and other related programs including meal counting and claiming. This role is critical in developing, implementing, and training of standard operating procedures to ensure daily operations are maintaining compliance, as well as the development and delivery of all training for the department that provides student equitable access to healthy meal options. Reports To: Director of School Nutrition Daily Supervision: At the direction of the Director of School Nutrition, manages Lead Chef Trainer and Supervisor of Culinary Operations positions. Key Responsibilities: Compliance & Auditing 1. Regulatory Adherence: Ensure all operational procedures, including meal counting and claiming, eligibility determination (Free/Reduced), and food safety (HACCP), are 100% compliant with USDA and DESE guidelines. Maintain menu compliance documentation and ensure all foods served are in compliance with USDA and DESE regulations. 2. Administrative Reviews: Lead the district's preparation and response for all state and federal administrative reviews and audits, including the School Food Authority (SFA) Review and Civil Rights compliance. 3. Eligibility and Verification: Oversee the integrity of the student eligibility process, including the application distribution, processing, direct certification, and annual verification process. 4. Grant Oversight: Department point of contact for district Grants Management Team and responsible for implementation requirements for all department grants (e.g., USDA Equipment Grants, Farm-to-School), ensuring funds are utilized in compliance with grant rules. 5. Auditing: Conduct regular, district-wide audits of point of sale locations and review administrative records to proactively identify and correct potential compliance issues. Establish standard operating procedures to maintain program compliance in the daily operations. Training & Program Expansion 1. Standard Operating Procedures: Develop and maintain a comprehensive manual of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all key operational and compliance tasks, ensuring staff training materials are current. 2. Professional Development: Design, develop, and deliver mandatory training programs for all school site managers and staff, ensuring adherence to USDA Professional Standards requirements (e.g., nutrition, operations, food safety, civil rights). 3. Training: Manage district platform that manages and tracks employee training, develop and maintain training materials, including handbooks, presentations, online modules, and develop annual professional development calendar that ensures staff meet annual training hour requirements. 4. Breakfast Expansion: Lead the planning and implementation strategy for expanding Breakfast both in the cafeteria and in the Classroom (or other non-traditional feeding models) across the district, tracking participation, and troubleshooting logistical barriers. 5. Technology Training: Collaborate with the operations and finance team to develop and deliver training on Point-of-Sale (POS) systems, and other technology utilized for accurate meal claiming. 6. Other duties assigned. Qualifications ● Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition, Dietetics, Business Administration, or a related field strongly preferred. ● Minimum of five (5) years of experience in school nutrition, with a significant portion of that time dedicated to compliance, regulatory oversight, or program management with proven track record of successful administrative review outcomes. ● Knowledge of NSLP, SBP, CACFP, FFVP, USDA regulations (7 CFR), and state-specific education regulations (DESE/state agency guidelines). ● Proficiency in food service management software, inventory systems, Google and Microsoft Office Suite. ● Excellent leadership, communication, interpersonal skills and presentation skills for large-group training sessions. This is a full-time, twelve-month professional position that may require work at times outside of regular work hours when necessary to perform responsibilities.
