POSITION OVERVIEW: The school nurse substitute will assist the school nurses in their efforts to provide the fullest possible educational opportunity for students by minimizing absences due to illnesses/injuries and by creating a climate of health and well-being in the school. The substitute nurse receives direction from the school nurses and their principals.
Specific Duties Include:
- Serves as a full-time substitute school nurse for the Woodward Academy Community.
- Administers prescription medications from physicians’ orders and over the counter medications from established guidelines.
- Maintains medication records and reports adverse reactions or contraindications to the school nurses and principals.
- Provides health services, including first aid and CPR, according to established procedures.
- Provides specialized healthcare and treatments as prescribed.
- Provides guidance and counseling in the area of health to students, staff, and parents according to professional standards.
- Maintains accurate nurse’s notes, health records, and daily logs.
- Reports cases of diagnosed or suspected communicable disease to school nurse and principal.
- Maintains an inventory of health room supplies.
- Reports environmental conditions which may adversely affect the safety and health of the students and staff to the school nurse and principal.
- Maintains confidentiality by respecting privacy of students in the clinic with all forms of communication and while handling their health records.
- Remains current in school health procedures through orientation and additional training as required.
- Responds to school wide emergencies and communicates follow up care as needed for students and staff.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Skills:
- Language skills - ability to understand and communicate with both verbal and written skills. Ability to be easily understood when addressing parents, students, staff, and visitors.
- Reasoning skills – ability to apply common sense understanding and to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral forms. Ability to ascertain which people need immediate assistance and to act accordingly. Ability to prioritize and multi-task. Ability to work independently.
- Computer skills - ability to learn operation of office machines, computers, emails, and use of the internet.
Minimum Job Qualifications:
- Must be a graduate of a nursing program with a current Georgia Board of Nursing Licensure.
- Must maintain a current cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification.
- Physical demands – the ability to sit, talk, hear, visually intercept customers, and lift up to 30 pounds. Both close and distance vision is required.
The Substitute School Nurse position is an hourly, temporary position. EOE
