Position Overview
Woodstock Union Middle & High School is seeking a passionate and student-centered 0.5 FTE French Teacher to join our dynamic learning community. The ideal candidate fosters curiosity for world languages, builds strong relationships with students, and delivers engaging instruction aligned with Vermont Standards and the Common Core.
Our district uses Charlotte Danielson’s Framework for Teaching and Vermont’s Framework of Standards to guide professional practice and support continuous growth.
Essential Responsibilities
Planning & Preparation

Design engaging French language lessons aligned with MVSU curriculum, Vermont Standards, GLEs, and Common Core.

Demonstrate strong content knowledge in French language and culture.

Understand students’ backgrounds, skills, and interests to inform instructional decisions.

Use research-based instructional strategies and effective language acquisition approaches.

Develop assessments aligned with instructional goals; monitor progress and use data to inform instruction.

Integrate technology to enhance language learning and cultural exploration.
Classroom Environment

Create a respectful and inclusive classroom culture that supports risk-taking and language exploration.

Establish routines and expectations that foster a positive learning environment.

Promote student engagement, ownership, and pride in their language learning.

Support students’ social-emotional growth as part of their overall academic success.
Instruction

Clearly communicate learning targets, directions, and French language content.

Engage students in meaningful communicative tasks and higher-order thinking.

Use a variety of instructional strategies, including differentiation for diverse learners.

Provide whole-group, small-group, and individualized instruction.

Incorporate formative and summative assessments; teach students to self-assess and reflect on their learning.

Use student performance data and district tools to guide planning and instruction.
Professional Responsibilities

Stay current on world language pedagogy and district initiatives.

Reflect on teaching practices to support continuous professional growth.

Communicate regularly with families regarding student progress.

Collaborate closely with colleagues, Special Educators, and support personnel to meet student needs.

Participate in professional learning communities and schoolwide initiatives.

Maintain accurate records and complete required reports.

Model professionalism, positive work habits, and enthusiasm for teaching French.

Perform additional duties as assigned by the Principal.
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree required; experience teaching French or working with adolescents preferred.

Strong knowledge of French language, culture, and effective world language instructional methods.

Proficiency with educational technology and Google Workspace.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to collaborate effectively.

Ability to manage stress, solve problems, and maintain compassion and patience with students.

Willingness to participate in professional development and required meetings, including those held outside regular school hours.
Licensure & Certifications

Valid Vermont Educator License with French endorsement (or ability to obtain).

Successful criminal background check required.
