About Woodstock Day School
Founded in 1973, Woodstock Day School (WDS) is a progressive, independent school set on a 40-acre campus in New York’s Hudson Valley. Located midway between the towns of Woodstock and Saugerties and roughly two hours north of Manhattan, WDS is an accredited member of the New York State Association of Independent Schools and offers a unique and inclusive educational experience to approximately 200 students from nursery school through grade twelve.
Summary:
Woodstock Day School is seeking a dedicated and reliable Custodian to join our Facilities team. As a Custodian, you will play a vital role in maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for our students, faculty, and staff. This position requires a high level of physical stamina and the ability to perform a variety of tasks, both indoors and outdoors. This is a full-time, 12-month position, working Monday through Friday from 2:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m with flexibility to alter hours if needed.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:
Completion of high school/GED and three years related custodial work experience.
Key Responsibilities:
Cleaning and Maintenance:
- Floor Care: Sweeping, mopping, and vacuuming floors and stairs using equipment such as backpack vacuums, auto scrubbers, and floor buffers.
- Surface Cleaning: Dusting desks, woodwork, furniture, and other equipment.
- Window and Wall Washing: Washing windows, walls, whiteboards, sinks, and other fixtures, often requiring the use of a ladder.
- Furniture and Metal Polishing: Polishing furniture and metal furnishings.
- Floor Refinishing: Stripping and sealing floors, including the removal and replacement of all furniture in rooms during the refinishing process.
- Waste Disposal: Emptying waste baskets, collecting and disposing of rubbish, including carrying bags of rubbish up and down several flights of stairs and disposing of large/heavy pieces of rubbish into a dumpster..
- Painting: Painting rooms and equipment, requiring painting of entire rooms.
- Light Fixture Maintenance: Replacing light bulbs and performing other minor electrical tasks, often while on a ladder.
Groundskeeping:
- Snow Removal: Clearing snow and ice from walks, driveways using a large snow blower and shovels.
- Grounds Upkeep: Maintaining grounds by picking up trash and debris.
Special Events and Logistics:
- Event Setup: Arranging chairs, tables, and other equipment for special use of buildings, including breaking down and setting up tables, stacking and moving chairs and moving pieces of furniture to the correct design.
- Package Delivery: Delivering packages, requiring lifting and carrying heavy items (upstairs included).
- Traffic Control: Putting out and taking in traffic safety signs, requiring moving and carrying traffic cones to wherever is needed on property. Assisting with directing traffic.
Building Security and Monitoring:
- Building Patrol: When assigned to night duty, policing buildings and boiler rooms, monitoring all parts of our campus.
Physical Requirements and Abilities:
- Ability to climb ladders (up to 12 feet in height).
- Ability to carry large quantities of cleaning products.
- Ability to lift and move heavy objects.
- Physical condition relative to the demands of the position, including the ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, lift, and carry for extended periods.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Good knowledge of building cleaning practices, supplies, and equipment.
- Ability to use supplies and equipment efficiently.
- Ability to perform a variety of routine maintenance tasks.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Prepares and maintains a variety of records and reports.
- Performs a variety of related tasks as required.
- May unload deliveries, stock shelves, and issue supplies.
