Description
Under the guidance of the Director of Group Fitness, and the direction of the Group Fitness Manager, the Group Fitness Instructor (“GFI”) is responsible for the preparation and instruction of assigned group exercise classes within Woodside protocols. The GFI must be passionate, self-motivated, effective and a team player who emphasizes member service, program retention and club promotion. This individual must be an example of health and fitness and be professional in appearance. The GFI must work to motivate members to participate in classes that may include but are not limited to the following formats: low impact, aquatic, barre, boxing, strength and conditioning, dance, flexibility, high intensity, indoor cycling, Mat Pilates, running, rowing and yoga.
Duties / Responsibilities
- Prepares class formats in advance, including appropriate movement selection and full memorization of routines
- Selects appropriate music that aligns with the class format and enhances the overall class experience
- Provides proper regressions and progressions based on individual participant needs or physical limitations
- Ensures all classes begin and end on time
- Adheres to the published class description and adjusts intensity levels as needed; instructs participants on maintaining safe and effective exertion levels
- Maintains schedule consistency and minimizes substitutions to ensure stability for members
- Creates a welcoming, inclusive and non-judgmental environment; actively observes participants to assess form, safety and ability to follow the routine, helping reduce risk of injury
- Maintains current required certifications and stays informed on industry trends, applying relevant knowledge from continuing education, workshops and professional development
- Submits schedule availability upon request or schedule changes at least 2 weeks in advance
- Communicates proactively with the Director of Group Fitness and Group Fitness Manager regarding equipment needs, sub requests, member class feedback/issues and opportunities for skill development
- Provides emergency first aid when required
- Troubleshoots issues with studio
- equipment, sound systems and microphones; promptly reports unresolved issues to the Group Fitness Manager
- Abides by all Woodside rules & regulations, policies and procedures and attends GFI training meetings (Forum) as required
- Complies with the Club’s employee handbook manual, departmental policies and procedures and with all applicable federal and state employment laws
- Completes all other duties as directed/assigned
Qualifications/Physical Functions
Any combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge is qualifying. Typical qualifications would be equivalent to:
