POSITION TITLE: Dean of Students

LOCATION: Dickson Preparatory STEAM Academy

REPORTS TO: Building Principal

Qualifications

  • Appropriate certification (Teaching, Counseling, or Administrative)
  • Experience in student discipline, PBIS implementation, restorative practices, or related school leadership roles preferred

JOB GOAL

The Dean of Students is responsible for promoting a positive, safe, and supportive school culture by implementing student discipline procedures, Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), restorative practices, attendance initiatives, and student engagement programs. The Dean works collaboratively with students, families, teachers, counselors, and administrators to improve student behavior, increase academic success, and foster a positive learning environment. The Dean serves as a key leader in developing systems that support student accountability, social-emotional growth, and school-wide behavioral expectations.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

Student Discipline and Behavior Management

  • Administer and enforce the school's student code of conduct and disciplinary policies in a fair and just manner.
  • Investigate student behavior incidents and determine appropriate interventions and consequences.
  • Maintain accurate discipline records and documentation in accordance with district policies and state regulations.
  • Conduct student conferences, parent meetings, and restorative conversations to address behavioral concerns.
  • Monitor discipline data and develop strategies to reduce suspensions, expulsions, and recurring behavioral issues.
  • Support teachers with classroom management strategies and behavior intervention plans.
  • Collaborate with counselors, social workers, and special education staff to address behavioral needs.
  • Provide documentation and make recommendations to the Principal regarding student discipline matters.

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS)

  • Lead the implementation and sustainability of the school's PBIS framework.
  • Coordinate PBIS team meetings and school-wide behavioral initiatives.
  • Develop and monitor behavior expectations, incentive programs, and recognition systems.
  • Analyze PBIS data to identify trends and recommend interventions.
  • Provide professional development to staff on PBIS practices and behavioral supports.
  • Ensure consistency in behavioral expectations and interventions across all grade levels.

Restorative Practices

  • Facilitate restorative circles, mediations, and conflict-resolution processes.
  • Promote restorative approaches to discipline that focus on accountability, relationship-building, and student growth.
  • Train staff on restorative practices and proactive behavior supports.
  • Support students in repairing harm and rebuilding positive relationships following behavioral incidents.

Attendance and Student Engagement

  • Oversee all matters of student attendance, tardiness, and truancy concerns and make recommendations to the Principal for resolution of chronic attendance problems.
  • Collaborate with families and community agencies to address barriers to attendance.
  • Develop initiatives that promote student engagement, connectedness, and school participation.
  • Coordinate interventions for students identified as at risk for chronic absenteeism.
  • Chair the Student Assistance Program (SAP) and coordinate school and community resources for identified students. (SAP trained)

School Climate and Culture

  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and respectful school environment.
  • Support the development of social-emotional learning (SEL) programs and initiatives.
  • Supervise student activities, assemblies, transitions, lunch periods, arrival, and dismissal procedures.
  • Assist with crisis management, safety planning, and emergency response procedures.
  • Build positive relationships with students, families, staff, and community stakeholders.
  • Participate in the coordination, implementation, and supervision of the extracurricular program.

Family and Community Engagement

  • Serve as a liaison between home and school regarding behavioral and attendance concerns.
  • Confer with parents, teachers, counselors, support service personnel, and students on matters of discipline and welfare.
  • Conduct parent conferences and develop collaborative behavior improvement plans.
  • Connect families with community resources and support services when appropriate.
  • Promote family engagement in school-wide PBIS and student success initiatives.

Leadership And Administrative Responsibilities

  • Serve on the school's leadership team.
  • Assist with school improvement planning related to behavior, attendance, and school climate goals.
  • Analyze behavioral and attendance data to guide decision-making and interventions.
  • Investigate matters of student welfare.
  • Support district initiatives and ensure compliance with federal, state, and district policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Salary, work schedule, evaluation, and other conditions of employment are in accordance with the current Act 93 agreement.
