Job Description: Looking for an assistant land steward to perform horticulture/landscaping duties on a 28-acre estate that is home to traditional landscaping elements along with pocket meadows, pond, stream, and native plant installation. A positive attitude, industrious individual and ability to work independently or with those as part of a larger collaborative group are key to this team. This position requires someone with an eye for detail, a passion for plants, protecting ecosystems, and cultivating a piece of the world for future generations to experience.
Position Type: Full-Time position, generally Monday through Friday, with potential of some Saturdays required based on weather and projects. To be discussed at time of interview. Staff is required to work from March to end of November. This hourly paid position can lead to a full time salaried position.
Compensation: Hourly rate ranges from $20-$25 per hour based on experience. Bank holidays off and paid sick time. Pay to be discussed at time of interview.
Date Available: Beginning February 2023
Duties and Responsibilities:
- This position frequently requires physical labor and the use of motorized equipment and other tools.
- Demonstrate the ability to operate small engine equipment safely and effectively such as string trimmers, backpack blowers and push mowers.
- Including but not limited to, weeding, planting, watering, pruning, mulching, seeding, mowing, string trimming, digging, transplanting and other various tasks associated with this career.
- Pond and stream management.
- Small engine/equipment maintenance.
- Administrative duties such as ordering, organizing, creating, and documenting.
Qualifications/Requirements:
- An applicant must have knowledge of basic horticulture skills (i.e. pruning, planting, mulching, string trimmers, blowers, edging etc..)
- Be able to identify plants and show an aptitude to learn new species.
- Be able and willing to work in most weather conditions.
- Be able and willing to lift at least 50 lbs. continuously throughout a day and perform strenuous tasks, including extensive walking.
- Strong communication demonstrated through listening, follow through on tasks assigned and feedback.
- Must be comfortable to wade into water from ankle to hip deep for pond/stream maintenance and planting. We provide the waders.
- Demonstrate sound judgement for safety.
- Degree or certification in the field of horticulture, arboriculture, plant science or similar field, or 2 years experience in the horticultural industry or similar field. We are happy & willing to train and guide the right applicant.
Preferred (But not Required) Skills
- Experience operating zero turn mowers and chain saws
- Familiarity with landscape design plans
- Knowledge of herbicides and appropriate use
- Integrated pest management
- Microsoft Office Suite
- Turf Management
- Pruning
