What are the responsibilities and job description for the Estimator position at Wood Roofing and Sheet Metal?
Primary Responsibilities – The Estimator is the person responsible for preparing an accurate competitive cost proposals for small to large projects including new construction and re-roofing projects by analyzing project specifications, conducting site visits and calculating labor, material and equipment need. Secure profitable work by reviewing bid specifications, managing vendor quotes and collaborating with clients, contractors, and project managers.
Job Duties –
- Estimating
o Assist in pursuits and preconstruction activities – presentations, estimating and bidding – pre-job walk throughs, meetings, and site visits
o Review proposal specifications and analyze building drawings and details to determine scope of work and required contents of estimate
o Site Inspections – On-site inspections to evaluate existing roof conditions, structural requirements and site safety
o Take-offs – Perform detailed digital material take-offs to calculate required materials, labor hours and equipment needs
o Vendor Relationships: Solicit and analyze pricing from material manufacturers and subcontractors
o Communicate with Owner, Architect, Engineer, and Property Managers to clarify project requirements
o Post bid follow up
- Administrative
o Project Documentation - Track awarded contracts – maintain organized project files, historical data and bid tracking reports
o Assist with setting up schedule of values
Required Skills-
- Prior experience in commercial roofing, construction estimating or related field
- Knowledge and experience of all commercial roof systems – EPDM, BUR, TPO, PVC
- Proficiency in estimating software (Edge, Accubid) and digital takeoff tools (CAD, Bluebeam)
- Strong attention to detail – excellent math skills – capable of performing complex tasks
- Must not be afraid of heights – able to access commercial roofs
- Proficient in Office software – word, excel, database, and presentation software
- Secondarily able to procure work through new or existing customer relationships.
- Excellent communication skills – both written and verbal
- Must be able to work as a part of a functioning team in a cooperative environment with open communication.
- Familiarity with the submittal process
Education – Required experience in this role or similar. Commercial roofing knowledge is necessary. Bachelor’s degree in construction management, engineering or project management is a plus.
