WomenatthecentrE is a unique non-profit organization, developed by and for women, gender-diverse,  and trans survivors of gender-based violence (GBV). We work to eradicate all forms of violence against women, girls, gender diverse, 2 spirit, and trans folks. WomenathecentrE is the first survivor-led organization in Canada dedicated to ensuring the voices and expertise of survivors are central in the implementation and development of policies and programs aimed at eradicating GBV. With 7,000 members across the world engaging in personal, political, and social advocacy, WomenatthecentrE thrives on membership engagement and shared experiences that come together to create transformative change in our communities.

The Project: Beyond Surviving: Capacity to grow, sustain, and dream (1-year initiative)

The project will sustainably improve our team's functionality; our survivor capacity to lead gender-equity work in the non-profit sector, and manage and support teams; our capacity to plan, apply for, administer, manage, evaluate, and report on projects; our capacity to collaborate, connect, and work as a collective involved in decision making; and our capacity to engage in trauma and violence informed community-based participatory research (CBPR), measuring and understanding impact.

A team of survivors with lived experience of various and intersection forms of gender-based violence will lead the project. A survivor-Stakeholder Advisory Committee, involving our staff, Board members, leadership, students, and volunteers, will also meet monthly to guide the project, simultaneously fostering team culture, collaboration, and diverse survivor-perspectives.

Project activities include project and team management practices. This involves structured team onboarding and offboarding, and project launch, monitoring, reporting, closure, and third party and internal evaluation.

Project Activities:

  • Grow: The project will develop and launch Human Relation GBA policies, practices and processes, a Survivor-Led Research Manual and associated team trainings, including OCAP training access, project management trainings, and curated individualized training plans. These activities will strengthen internal team capacity, support, and culture, and strengthen research and evaluation and project management practices, knowledge, and tools.
  • Sustain: The project will develop an organizational sustainability plan and grant-writing guidelines. These activities will provide a sustainability plan for implementation and strengthen our team's grant writing capacity and collective voice.
  • Dream: The project will develop an organizational roadmap to define our voice, vision, and strategic plan for the next three years. A 2-day in-person team engagement event will be coordinated to build culture, connection, and knowledge share. These activities will strengthen organizational culture and provide strategic organizational direction.

The project aims to improve our capacity to achieve our mandate, adapt to sector change, administer projects with national scope and impact, and sustain our work beyond project timelines.
