What We’re Looking For
The Accounting Director is responsible for the day-to-day financial operations of WHW and serves as the operational leader of the Accounting Department. Working closely with the CFO, this position ensures the integrity of the organization's financial records, oversees accounting operations, strengthens internal controls, and ensures compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Uniform Guidance, grant requirements, and nonprofit financial best practices. 
The Accounting Director provides leadership to the accounting team and volunteers while producing timely and accurate financial information that supports organizational decision-making and mission impact. This role serves as the CFO's primary operational partner and acts on behalf of the CFO in accounting matters when appropriate.
 
What You Will Be Responsible For
  • Ensuring monthly financial statements are completed accurately and on schedule. 
  • Maintaining clean annual audit results with minimal adjustments. 
  • Ensuring timely completion of all grant reporting requirements. 
  • Maintaining effective internal controls and regulatory compliance. 
  • Improving efficiency through process enhancements and automation. 
  • Developing and managing a high-performing accounting team capable of supporting organizational growth.
 
About You
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance. 
  • Minimum 7–10 years of progressive accounting experience. 
  • Minimum 3–5 years of supervisory experience. 
  • Experience with federal and state grant accounting and compliance. 
  • Experience managing annual audits. 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word, with the ability to efficiently create, edit, analyze, and manage financial documents and spreadsheets.
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills. 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong nonprofit accounting experience.
  • Knowledge of GAAP.
  • Experience with Sage, MIP or similar nonprofit accounting software.

  • Collaboration: Builds positive working relationships across departments to support organizational objectives and provide exceptional internal customer service. 
  • Confidentiality: Safeguards sensitive financial, personnel, and organizational information with the highest level of professionalism and discretion. 
  • Continuous Learning: Actively pursues professional development and stays current on accounting standards, grant regulations, technology, and nonprofit best practices. 
 
Compensation
The compensation range for this salaried, exempt opportunity is $75K-$90K. The target compensation range is subject to multiple factors including education and experience.
