Position Summary

Wolverine Packing is hiring Preventive Maintenance Technicians!! The Preventive Maintenance (PM) Technician performs scheduled inspections, servicing, and minor repairs on production equipment and facility systems within a meat processing plant. This role ensures all machinery operates safely, reliably, and efficiently to support continuous production. The technician focuses on minimizing downtime, identifying potential failures early, and maintaining compliance with food safety and USDA standards.

Reports To: Maintenance Supervisor 

6 day work schedule, varies by plant, 45 - 55 hours per week

Pay is flexible based on experience: $22-$26/HR 

Location: Detroit, Michigan 

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt / Full-Time


Key Responsibilities:

Preventive Maintenance

  • Perform routine PM tasks on meat-processing equipment such as conveyors, grinders, slicers, vemag machines, mixers, vacuum packers, scales, refrigeration systems, and automated cutting/packaging lines.
  • Lubricate equipment, replace worn components, adjust mechanical settings, and verify all safety guards and sensors are functional.
  • Inspect and maintain facility equipment and systems as needed. 
  • Ensure all PM work follows manufacturer guidelines, plant SOPs, and sanitation requirements.

Repairs & Troubleshooting

  • Identify early signs of equipment wear or failure, including belts, bearings, motors, electrical components, and pneumatic/hydraulic systems.
  • Perform minor repairs or adjustments to maintain optimal operation and prevent production downtime.
  • Assist maintenance mechanics during major repairs, changeovers, or breakdowns.

Food Safety, Sanitation & Compliance

  • Follow all sanitation, GMP, HACCP, and USDA compliance requirements when working on or near production equipment.
  • Perform maintenance tasks in a manner that prevents contamination of food products and maintains a clean work environment.
  • Adhere to Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), chemical handling, and safety procedures specific to a meat processing facility.

Documentation & Communication

  • Accurately document completed PM tasks, parts usage, and inspection findings in the maintenance management system (CMMS).
  • Communicate equipment issues or high-risk findings to supervisors and production leads promptly.
  • Help update PM schedules, SOPs, and maintenance documentation as needed.

Qualifications:

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • 1–3 years of maintenance experience in a production, facility, building or warehouse environment preferred.
  • Technical schooling in mechanical, electrical, or industrial systems is desirable.

Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret equipment manuals, schematics, and work orders.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills. 
  • Comfortable working in cold, wet, or refrigerated environments.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, and climb for extended periods.
  • Lift and carry up to 50 lbs. regularly.
  • Work in cold or chilled environments (30–45°F), as well as warm equipment rooms.
  • Ability to work around raw meat, sanitation chemicals, and moving machinery.

Work Environment:

  • Production floor with cold temperatures, moisture, noise, and industrial equipment.
  • May require overtime and weekend availability depending on production schedule.
