Special Education Reading Teacher 

The Special Education Teacher will provide special education reading services for disabled students across grades.The Special Education Teacher reports directly to the Principal of the School and the Director of Student Services, and is expected to work closely with all district personnel to provide high quality instruction to our diverse student population. S/he will provide a safe, equitable, culturally responsive learning environment with high expectations for all students. This position will provide direct instruction in specialized reading programs as well as support in the inclusion/general education setting.

Role and Responsibilities:

  • Create a welcoming, inclusive, culturally responsive classroom environment that is conducive to student's learning and their ability to comfortably share their authentic selves.
  • Work in collaboration with the Special Education team to organize, implement and oversee the delivery of reading services for eligible students.
  • Provide instruction to students in both the Special Education setting and the General Education setting. Provide direct reading instruction in individual and small group settings.
  • Must possess a strong background in design and implementation of reading curriculum, differentiated instruction,  and positive behavior management programs.
  • Wilson Reading Program certification preferred.
  • Experience with being part of the instructional support team, including classroom teachers, auxiliary special education support service providers, BCBA's, etc.
  • Experience working with a team of Special Education and General Education professionals and paraprofessionals.
  • Experience with IEP drafting and progress monitoring through the collection of data across the academic year.
  • Experience with administering assessments including, but not limited to the WIAT.
  • Demonstrated results-oriented instruction utilizing various reading, math, and written language programs.
  • Demonstrated relationship building and communication skills with parents and other community liaisons.
  • Abide by state statutes, school board policies and regulations.
  • Attend meetings and perform duties as assigned by administrators or supervisors.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy and administrative regulation.
  • Serve on committees as assigned.
  • Remain current on instructional practices in education, (e.g. instructional technology)
  • Development of daily schedule and materials prep (visual or tactile schedules/Manipulatives/hands on activities.
  • Consultation with outside providers.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Assistant Director of Student Services
  •  Qualifications & Skill Set:

  • BA required; Master's Degree from an accredited institution in the field of Education preferred
  • Training and/or knowledge of various reading programs (Orton-Gillingham, Wilson Reading, Lindamood Bell).  Level 1 Wilson certified preferred
  • Prefer: Teaching experience in Special Education/related practicum
  • Minimum: Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education licensure in Moderate Special Needs with corresponding grade levels
  • Terms of Employment: As outlined in the Agreement Between The Woburn Teachers' Association and The Woburn School Committee.

    Please note that salary placement is determined in accordance with your years of experience and level of education.
