Coordinator of Guidance (Grades 9 - 12)
The Coordinator of Guidance provides leadership, coordination, and supervision of the school counseling program. This role ensures that comprehensive academic, social-emotional, and post-secondary planning services are delivered to support all students. The coordinator oversees guidance staff, collaborates with school administrators and families, and ensures compliance with district policies, state regulations, and best practices in student counseling and support services.
Report To: Office of Student Services, Building Principals
Work Year: 12-month full-year position
Work Schedule: 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM (Occasional evening and weekend events may be scheduled, and the coordinator may be required to attend as part of their responsibilities.)
Salary: $110,000 - $135,000, depending on qualifications and experience.
Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in School Counseling, Guidance, or a related field.
- Valid Massachusetts educator license in guidance and/or counseling areas as well as Supervisor/coordinator in School Counseling licensure.
- Minimum five (5) years of experience providing direct services to students.
Primary Responsibilities
- Plan, coordinate, supervise, and evaluate the effectiveness of guidance services, including the implementation of the guidance curricula and programs for high school.
- Assist in the recruitment, selection, induction, supervision, and evaluation of guidance faculty.
- Promote and foster an inclusive, supportive, and team-oriented culture across the guidance department and the broader school community.
- Development of the master schedule for WMHS under the supervision of the Principal. Coordinates with the high school leadership team on other aspects of the scheduling process.
- Supervise the course selection process as implemented by guidance staff, including recommendations and student course selections; collaborate with administration regarding course sequence, content, and requirements; coordinate communication with students and families regarding course requests and approval timelines.
- Develop and oversee the procedures for Guidance Counselors to support students adding/dropping courses during the school year.
- Make recommendations for and implement changes to existing guidance practices or innovations to improve the functioning of the guidance department, ensuring vertical alignment across grades 9-12.
- Assist building administration in the development and distribution of the Program of Studies.
- Oversee the administration of college testing and college placement activities, including AP testing.
- Oversee the coordination of 504 services and supervise individual counselor compliance with the 504 process.
- Coordinate and oversee the MTSS process at WMHS in conjunction with members of the MTSS team and district administration.
- Collaborate with the SEL Coordinator to support any SEL initiatives.
- Collaborate with the District Student Services Office on data review, Tier 2/3 support structures, and student wellness initiatives.
- Organize the administration of the PSAT, SAT, ACT, and AP testing, as well as district-wide universal screens.
- Collaborate with building administration on a robust registration process for new students. Supervise individual counselors and their scheduling of new students at WMHS.
- Oversee the 8th- to 9th-grade transition process.
- Provide consultations on cases with counselors as needed.
- Organize and publicize the annual schedule of guidance-related programs and activities, including Financial Aid Night, Post-secondary Information Night, and Grade 9 Welcome Night, etc.
- Collect, maintain, and organize student records in accordance with DESE regulations.
- Assists in the coordination of professional development for district school counseling staff to enhance their job-related knowledge and skills.
- Conduct regularly scheduled guidance staff meetings with high school counseling staff.
- Represents the district at relevant local and state school counseling meetings.
- Adhere to the ethical standards of the state and national school counselor associations.
- Facilitate the implementation of the guidance curricula/programs for all students, which foster increased self-awareness, academic responsibilities, career options, future planning, and social and emotional growth.
- Participates in WMHS leadership meetings; collaborates with other Student Services Coordinators.
- Coordinate early college programming at WMHS
- Create recruitment materials and facilitate information sessions in multiple languages
- Distribute student and family interest surveys to all students and families
- Implement and oversee a progress monitoring process for the early college program
- Sustain and grow partnerships with UMass Lowell and other colleges and universities, and work to connect both students and families to support services that will help to address educational barriers
- Oversee and collaborate on the implementation of student screening/risk applications.
- Coordinate with the student services office to obtain transcripts for students attending schools outside WMHS.
- Other duties as assigned.
