Overview

The Western North Carolina Youth Homelessness Partnership is seeking youth and young adults ages 16–24 to serve as paid Regional Peer Navigators and members of the Regional Youth Action Board.

Regional Peer Navigators help community partners better understand the experiences of young people facing housing instability, family conflict, transportation barriers, school or work challenges, limited support, and difficulty asking for help. Youth selected for this role will share ideas, review outreach strategies, participate in community conversations, and help make services more accessible and trustworthy for young people.

No resume or previous professional experience is required.

This opportunity is part of a federal Youth Homelessness System Improvement grant funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development through HealthNet Gaston.

What You Will Do

You will attend youth leadership meetings and training, provide feedback on community projects, help shape outreach messages and campaign ideas, participate in listening sessions, and help connect the project with other youth perspectives.

Regional Peer Navigators are youth leaders and peer connectors. They are not case managers, counselors, crisis workers, housing screeners, transportation providers, or service coordinators.

Who We Are Looking For

Applicants must be ages 16–24 and live, attend school, work, receive services, or have a strong connection to the local project area.

We are looking for youth and young adults interested in leadership, outreach, advocacy, and community change. Applicants may bring personal experience or community knowledge related to housing instability, couch surfing, family conflict, foster care transition, parenting, transportation, school, work, LGBTQIA experiences, rural barriers, trusted adults, or asking for help.

Applicants will not be required to disclose private, traumatic, medical, or personal information.

Pay and Schedule

Pay is $20 per hour for approved project activities.

The project runs from August 2026 through March 2027. Participants may complete up to 15 paid hours during August orientation and training and up to 10 paid hours per month from September through March.

Most meetings will be virtual, with some in-person activities in the local area. Camera-on participation is required for virtual meetings. Youth under age 18 will need parent or guardian consent and completed paperwork before paid participation begins.

Location

This is a regional opportunity serving youth and young adults across Western North Carolina, including Avery, Burke, Caldwell, Cherokee, Clay, Cleveland, Gaston, Graham, Haywood, Henderson, Jackson, Lincoln, Macon, McDowell, Mitchell, Polk, Rutherford, Swain, Transylvania, and Yancey counties.

Applicants should live, attend school, work, receive services, or have a strong community connection in one or more of these counties.

How to Apply

No resume is required. Applicants will complete a short interest form about their interests, perspective, availability, and any support they may need to participate successfully. https://forms.gle/ZbT4XhcoNocHAA5W7 or tinyurl.com/WNCYHPRPN
