The Opportunity
We are seeking a strategic and detail-oriented Controller to lead our accounting team and partner with senior leadership. This key role ensures financial accuracy, compliance, and efficiency while contributing to long-term planning that advances WNC’s mission. The Controller manages core accounting operations, provides insightful financial analysis, and plays a vital role in improving processes and supporting organizational growth.
What You’ll Do
Financial Leadership & Reporting
- Prepare, review, and deliver timely financial reports, KPI dashboards, and budget-to-actual variance analyses.
- Present findings and recommendations to the VP of Accounting & Finance and senior leadership.
- Maintain and update monthly cash flow projections to support decision-making.
- Oversee annual corporate and partnership audits, coordinating with external auditors.
- Ensure timely and accurate completion of corporate and partnership tax returns.
- Maintain financial records in compliance with GAAP and company policies.
- Lead month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes and account reconciliations.
- Manage corporate credit cards, revenue recognition worksheets, and owner distributions.
- Review and approve department-related invoices, check payments, and wire transfers.
- Drive process improvements and efficiencies across accounting operations.
- Lead special projects and initiatives as assigned.
- Supervise and mentor a team of seven (three direct reports).
- Build a culture of accountability, collaboration, and professional growth.
- Set clear expectations and provide ongoing coaching and support.
- Partner with department heads on budgets, reporting, and process improvement initiatives.
- Collaborate with the VP of Accounting & Finance to forecast, budget, and manage financial systems (Yardi and Datarails).
- Support the development of long-term strategic plans.
- Negotiate and liaise with client financial staff, bank representatives, and vendors.
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field.
- 8 years of progressive accounting experience.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP accounting principles and proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
- Proven experience managing and developing effective teams.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
- MBA and/or CPA.
- Experience in real estate, affordable housing, or LIHTC syndication.
- Proficiency with Yardi, Datarails, or similar financial systems.
- FINRA reporting experience.
