The Macon R-1 School District is seeking Substitute Bus Drivers for the 2025-2026 school year.
Substitute Bus Drivers are responsible for safely transporting students to and from school, extra-curricular activities and field trips in the absence of regular bus drivers. The driver plays a critical role in maintaining a safe, efficient, and supportive environment on the bus for students, staff, and other road users.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or G.E.D.
- Valid commercial driver's license (CDL) with a school bus endorsement (or ability to obtain one)
- Previous experience as a bus driver, or in a similar driving/transportation role preferred but not required
- Experience working with children is a plus
- Ability to follow safety procedures, manage student behavior
- Ability to work under a team concept
- Good communication skills and organizational skills
- Must pass background check
Essential Job Duties:
- Flexibility in scheduling is required to fill in for absent regular drivers;
- Follow assigned routs, including regular and alternative routes for special activities and ensure punctuality;
- Ensure students board and disembark the bus in a safe and orderly manner;
- Obey all traffic laws, including speed limits, stop signs, and traffic signals;
- Maintain pupil control and write reports on misconduct of students if necessary;
- Inspect vehicle before driving;
- Report any irregularities in vehicle before or after route
Communication Skills:
- Ability to give clear, concise and loud instructions to both children and drivers.
- Ability to show courtesy, tact, and respect when dealing with others.
- Ability to stay calm in emergency situations.
- Ability to show positive, confident and alert body language helps convey authority and attention to safety.
