Substitute Bus Driver

The Macon R-1 School District is seeking Substitute Bus Drivers for the 2025-2026 school year.  

Substitute Bus Drivers are responsible for safely transporting students to and from school, extra-curricular activities and field trips in the absence of regular bus drivers.  The driver plays a critical role in maintaining a safe, efficient, and supportive environment on the bus for students, staff, and other road users.

Qualifications:

• High School Diploma or G.E.D.
• Valid commercial driver's license (CDL) with a school bus endorsement (or ability to obtain one)
• Previous experience as a bus driver, or in a similar driving/transportation role preferred but not required
• Experience working with children is a plus
• Ability to follow safety procedures, manage student behavior 
• Ability to work under a team concept
• Good communication skills and organizational skills
• Must pass background check

Essential Job Duties:

1. Flexibility in scheduling is required to fill in for absent regular drivers;
2. Follow assigned routs, including regular and alternative routes for special activities and ensure punctuality;
3. Ensure students board and disembark the bus in a safe and orderly manner;
4. Obey all traffic laws, including speed limits, stop signs, and traffic signals;
5. Maintain pupil control and write reports on misconduct of students if necessary;
6. Inspect vehicle before driving;
7. Report any irregularities in vehicle before or after route

Communication Skills:  

1. Ability to give clear, concise and loud instructions to both children and drivers.
2. Ability to show courtesy, tact, and respect when dealing with others.
3. Ability to stay calm in emergency situations.
4. Ability to show positive, confident and alert body language helps convey authority and attention to safety.
