JOB SUMMARY
In this role, you will help individuals participate in meaningful community activities, develop life and social skills, build natural supports, explore volunteer and employment opportunities, and increase their independence.
This is a community-based position where your work takes place in typical community settings—not simply in an office or facility.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
As a Direct Support Professional, you will:
- Provide individualized, person-centered support based on each individual's strengths, preferences, needs, and goals.
- Support individuals in accessing and participating in meaningful community activities.
- Support individuals in developing meaningful relationships and natural supports within their communities.
- Assist individuals develop social, communication, interpersonal, decision-making, and independent living skills.
- Encourage greater independence through teaching, coaching, modeling, prompting, and positive reinforcement.
- Support individuals in exploring volunteer and employment-related interests and developing appropriate workplace skills.
- Follow each individual's Individual Support Plan (ISP), plan for supports, behavioral support plan, and other applicable service documentation.
- Complete accurate and timely daily service documentation and progress notes.
- Document services and progress toward individualized goals.
- Implement positive behavioral support strategies as directed.
- Promote dignity, choice, self-determination, independence, and individual rights.
- Monitor and report health, safety, behavioral, or other significant changes.
- Participate in team meetings, supervision, training, and quality assurance activities.
- Communicate professionally with individuals, families/caregivers, supervisors, support coordinators, and other members of the individual's support team.
- Report suspected abuse, neglect, exploitation, serious incidents, and safety concerns in accordance with Virginia requirements and agency policy.
- Maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries at all times.
- Follow all applicable DBHDS, DMAS, and agency requirements.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or GED.
- Experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities, intellectual disabilities, autism, behavioral health needs, or other populations requiring direct support is preferred.
- Experience in human services, direct care, behavioral health, special education, social services, or a related field is a plus.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently while following supervisory direction.
- Ability to maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality.
- Ability to accurately complete required documentation.
- Reliable attendance and punctuality.
- Ability to work comfortably in community-based environments.
- Must successfully complete required background checks and pre-employment screening.
