We seek an energetic, enthusiastic, high-integrity Activity Leader to work directly with older adults in our Adult Day Service Center in San Monica.
I. POSITION SUMMARY
To ensure the overall safety, security, and well-being of elderly clients of the Adult Day Service Center (ADSC). The Activity Leader/Client Services Coordinator will lead activities that engage and stimulate older adults afflicted with memory loss. This role will also assist clients with activities of daily living, including assistance with eating, showering, toileting, and basic custodial care.
II. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assists with clients’ safe arrival and departure to the ADSC, including signing them in and out on a daily roster.
- Prepares, implements, and leads program activities as assigned daily.
- Escorts and assists clients with personal custodial needs, including toileting and showering as needed.
- Assists with meal and snack preparation and service; provides clients with needed assistance; monitors for general appetite and safety, and provides adequate fluids to maintain hydration.
- Monitors, reports, and documents clients’ meal intake, restroom schedule, health, behavior, hygiene changes, and program participation.
- Reports to the Supervisor any change in the client's health or behavior based on observations and activity project selections
- Communicates with family members as appropriate.
- Uses agency property and supplies responsibly.
- Assists in maintaining the cleanliness of the facility.
- Ability to safely maneuver clients who use wheelchairs (on upward and downward slopes) and those using assistive walking devices, involving pushing and controlling the device.
- Ability to transfer clients who use wheelchairs into and out of their chairs and into and out of vehicles, requiring lifting to 35 pounds unassisted
IV. OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES
Due to changing program demands, funding-source expectations, and agency policy changes, all staff may be expected to perform other duties as assigned.
V. POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Educational Requirements
- Must be at least 18, with a high school diploma or GED (some college preferred).
- A certified Nurse’s Assistant Certificate (CNA) is strongly preferred.
Experience
- At least one (1) year of experience working with older adults with dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, disabled, or other at-risk populations.
Skills
- Energetic, enthusiasm, kindness, creativity, flexibility, punctuality, and a commitment to teamwork.
- Ability to motivate clients to participate in activities of daily living.
- Ability to communicate clearly and anticipate the needs of clients.
- A basic understanding of problems associated with the impaired older adult is preferred, including memory loss, physical needs, assisting with transfers, and dealing with challenging behaviors.
- Sensitive to the needs of each individual.
- Leadership skills to implement therapeutic activity programs.
- Good communication/ relationship skills & sound judgment.
- Ability to independently plan, prepare, and carry out assignments.
Other
- Must obtain upon hire and maintain a CPR and First Aid card.
- Must complete Health Screening Report within three days of hire (proof of TB clearance must be kept current every four years as required by the County of Los Angeles).
- Fingerprint background clearance is required.
VI. CONSTRAINTS
WISE & Healthy Aging is funded through several government contracts and private and public fundraising. The continuation of all positions depends on the organization’s ability to maintain sufficient funding.
VII. WORK ENVIRONMENT
*Assistive mobility equipment is not available on-site. Due to the physical nature of the work, job duties must be performed safely to prevent overexertion injuries. This position requires transferring and maneuvering individuals. Must be able to maneuver up to 35 pounds.
