The SPD is currently recruiting to fill one part-time (80% FTE) Paralegal position for our Appleton Trial office. The position will work a minimum of 32 hours per week, with an opportunity to work up to 40 hours a week. Details regarding the work hours will be discussed at the interview stage.

Who We Are: SPD provides legal representation for persons who are accused of crimes or are defendants in certain specified civil matters, and who meet statutory financial eligibility criteria. The mission of the SPD is to zealously represent clients, protect constitutional rights, and advocate for an effective and fair criminal justice system. Position Summary

This position is responsible for conducting client intake and evaluates indigency. The position will also investigate cases and gather information to assist attorneys in case preparation. The position assists in the preparation of legal documents, including pleadings and briefs; gathers investigative information from a variety of sources; analyzes investigative information; conducts complex legal research; briefs expert witnesses with background information necessary for case evaluation identifying, locating and interviewing witnesses; assists attorneys with trial preparation and at trial proceedings; drafts special jury instructions; and assists with pre-sentencing investigations. Salary Information

Starting salary will be between $24.12 and $35.06 per hour, which is in pay schedule/range 07-04. A one-year probationary period will be required.

Permanent classified state employees who are eligible for consideration (transfer, voluntary demotion, or reinstatement) for a position assigned to the stated pay range or counter-part pay range, should complete the application process as described below by the stated deadline.

Final selected candidates may be eligible for moving expense reimbursement to relocate to the place of employment.

Job Details

Background Check: We consider all qualified applicants with criminal histories, consistent with applicable federal, state and local law. A criminal background check will be done prior to an offer of employment.

License Requirement: A valid driver's license and the ability/authorization to drive a state vehicle is required as a condition of employment. Travel to other counties in WI may be required.

Ability to Testify: Must possess ability to testify in an effective manner in court procedures. Testifying in an effective manner requires candidates and employees have no criminal convictions that may allow impeachment of testimony.

Eligibility to work in the US: The SPD does not sponsor work visas at the time of hire or anytime during employment. All persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and complete the required Employment Eligibility Form I-9.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications (Required - Candidates Must Have Experience And/or Training Relevant To These Areas In Order To Be Considered For This Position):

  • Preparing legal documents
  • Working with Google Suite products
  • Effective oral, written, and communication skills
  • Working effectively with people from different ethnic, cultural, political, economic, and religious backgrounds

A well-qualified candidate will also have experience and/or training in the following areas:

  • Paralegal experience
  • Knowledge of the criminal justice system
