- Positions with an "FTE" (full time equivalency) of .8 - 1.0 are eligible for full-time medical, dental and vision benefits. Positions with an "FTE" of .5 - .799 are eligible for part-time pro-rated medical, dental and vision benefits*
Summary
Floating between any of Wisconsin Diagnostic Laboratories’ patient service centers and collection sites, the Patient Services Float Phlebotomist collects and processes laboratory specimens and performs associated clerical functions pertaining to patient, client, and billing functions.
Responsibilities
- Following proper collection and specimen labeling procedures and AABB standards regarding patient identification; consistently obtains blood specimens by venipuncture, capillary draws, heel sticks, glucose tolerance testing, and/or blood cultures as described in the Wisconsin Diagnostic Laboratories Outside Phlebotomy Policy & Procedure manual.
- Regularly attends the mandatory phlebotomy and float meetings contributing to positive flow of communication.
- Following specimen collection, processes the specimen as appropriate by assuring accurate labeling of pour off tubes, following special handling requirements such as correct number of tubes, temperature constraints, and spinning down or aliquotting the specimen as applicable.
- Accurately and efficiently completes laboratory requisition forms and other forms by obtaining correct patient demographics, insurance information, diagnosis information, advanced beneficiary notification (ABN), and clarifying ambiguous physician orders.
- Keeps assigned site neat, orderly, and organized.
- Ensures patient confidentiality throughout the process; logs, sorts, and distributes laboratory reports to the appropriate client/clinic.
- Maintains the prescribed level of equipment and supplies, notifying leadership of equipment in need of repair or replacement on a timely basis..
- Willingly and professionally helps orient new or floating co-workers regarding location-specific procedures such as location/amount of supplies and operation of equipment.
- Proactively keeps leadership informed of changes, problems, concerns at his/her location.
- Able to navigate from site to site in a timely fashion.
- Maintains a high level of efficiency on all Patient Service Center and in-office patient site computer programs.
- Proficient at UDC’s, accurately completing paperwork regarding such collection.
- On a weekly basis, completes all maintenance logs, tally sheets, and any other forms required at their sites and returning such forms back to management when needed.
- Actively participates in training as needed.
- High School Diploma or GED is preferred.
- Completion of external phlebotomy program including clinical and 6 months experience with phlebotomy being a regular daily responsibility, including a minimum of 100 draws OR completion of Wisconsin Diagnostic Laboratories Phlebotomy School or equivalent enterprise program including clinical and minimum 3 months experience with phlebotomy being a regular daily responsibility, including a minimum of 100 draws OR in lieu of education (in either case), minimum of 1 year full time experience with phlebotomy being a regular daily responsibility, including a minimum of 100 draws.
- Windows-based computer skills and also skilled in clerical functions such as telephones, e-mails, pagers, running copy and fax machines.
- Valid driver’s license and Department of Motor Vehicle record meeting the requirements of Wisconsin Diagnostic Laboratories’ Vehicle Liability Policy.
- Map reading and way-finding skills throughout Greater Milwaukee area.
- Demonstrated complex problem-solving and excellent interpersonal skills.
