Job Summary:  The Certified Scrub Technologist is responsible for providing an optimal surgical environment for patients and surgeons, ensuring high standards of safety, efficiency, and sterile techniques. This role involves managing surgical supplies, preparing operating rooms, and assisting during surgical procedures to deliver exceptional patient care.

Essential Functions of the Position:

  • Pulls cases at least 2 days prior to verify that all necessary equipment and supplies are available
  • Stocks and inventories supplies
  • Prepares the surgical suite before each case
    • Wiping down the room
  • Gathers all necessary equipment and supplies in preparation for the case
  • Opens sterile supplies properly
  • Organizes the sterile field for use
  • Completes necessary counting of sponges, sharps, etc.
  • Assists and observes team members during entry to the sterile field
  • Drapes the surgical site with sterile drapes
  • Assists the surgeon during the case
    • Passes proper instrumentation, equipment and supplies to the surgeon and surgical assistant
    • Participates in Time Out process
    • Handles obtained specimens properly
    • Applies dressing
    • Maintains the sterile field throughout the case and until the patient is transported out of OR
  • Removes used instruments, equipment and supplies from the OR at the completion of the case. Maintains instruments, equipment and supplies
  • Assists with the transferring and positioning of patients
  • Instrument Reprocessing and Cleaning:
    • Performs sterile processing tasks when assigned to the Sterile Processing Department (SPD), including washing, decontaminating, assembling, and sterilizing surgical instruments and equipment in accordance with AAMI/ANSI standards.
    • Ensures all instruments are properly cleaned, inspected for damage, and reassembled prior to sterilization to maintain patient safety and procedural readiness.
    • Operates sterilizers, ultrasonic washers, and other reprocessing equipment, following manufacturer guidelines and regulatory standards.
    • Maintains accurate records of cleaning, decontamination, and sterilization activities, ensuring compliance with facility and regulatory requirements.
    • Conducts routine quality checks on sterilizers and other SPD equipment, promptly reporting any malfunctions or issues.
  • Assists with purchasing, ordering, receiving
  • Assists with departmental performance improvement standards.
  • Displays and leads with an attitude of respect and courtesy toward all patients, families, physicians, and coworkers.
  • Participates in announced and unannounced surveys
  • Participates in all meetings and in-service

 

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Maintains all required regulatory training and participates in mandatory drills and staff meetings
  • Acts as a team member by providing relief coverage within the unit for breaks and lunches
  • Provides float coverage to other ASC departments and locations as needed & assigned
  • Performs other incidental and related duties as required and assigned

 

Physical and Mental Demands:

  • Lifting and Carrying:
  • Ability to lift, push, pull, and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds on a regular basis.
  • For items exceeding 50 pounds, team lifting or mechanical assistance will be required in accordance with facility protocols.
  • Standing and Mobility:
  • Ability to stand for prolonged periods, typically 8-10 hours per shift, with intermittent walking and bending.
  • Perform frequent tasks that require reaching overhead, stooping, and crouching.
  • Fine Motor Skills and Repetitive Motions:
  • Ability to handle surgical instruments with precision and perform delicate tasks requiring fine motor skills and attention to detail and precise hand-eye coordination.
  • Perform repetitive motions as needed for cleaning, sterilizing, and organizing instruments.
  • Environmental Conditions:
  • Ability to push and pull surgical equipment, instrument trays, and supply carts.
  • Comfortable working in areas with moderate noise levels, exposure to cleaning chemicals, and temperature variations.
  • May have occasional exposure to biological hazards and must follow appropriate PPE protocols.

Occupational Exposure:

  • High risk exposure to bloodborne pathogens and chemical hazards.
Qualifications:
  • High school graduate or GED equivalent
  • 1 year of experience working as a surgical technologist
  • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) certification required at time of hire or within 90 days of hire and must be maintained.
  • Current BLS, or must obtain within 90 days of hire.
