Position Overview
The Video Engineer is a hands-on, mid-level technical role responsible for preparing, operating, and supporting video systems for live events. This position requires strong technical knowledge, attention to detail, and the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
Video Engineers collaborate closely with the Production Operations Manager, Account Managers, and fellow technicians to ensure high-quality show execution from pre-production through post-show wrap.
This is a full-time, on-site role with regular travel and variable hours based on event schedules.
Key Responsibilities
Pre-Production & Planning
- Review event needs with Account Managers and the Production Operations Manager.
- Prepare equipment lists, cable lists, and documentation using Flex and standard processes.
- Assemble, organize, and inspect video systems prior to shows.
- Pre-program content and configure playback, switching, or server systems as needed.
- Communicate equipment shortages, conflicts, or labor needs promptly.
On-Site Production
Operate video systems across a variety of show environments, which may include:
- Video switching and live program execution
- Camera operation (handheld, lockoff, robotic, or AI-assisted)
- LED wall installation, configuration, and operation
- Video playback systems (Playback Pro, QLab, etc.)
- Barco S3 / Event Master system operation
- Projection setup and alignment
- Routing and patching video and audio sources
- Teleprompter operation
- Providing show-caller or TD support in smaller events
- Executing cues accurately and communicating clearly with the technical team
- Troubleshooting issues quickly under pressure
- Ensuring a professional client-facing presence at all times
Shop Workflow & Equipment Support
- Support equipment prep and return processes according to established workflows.
- Participate in cable management, labeling, documentation, and general shop upkeep.
- Assist with basic equipment maintenance, testing, and repairs (as skill allows).
- Complete post-show notes and reporting.
Collaboration & Communication
- Maintain strong, proactive communication with the POM before, during, and after events.
- Coordinate effectively with warehouse operations during show prep and loadout.
- Work respectfully and collaboratively with all departments.
- Represent Wired professionally on job sites and with clients.
Other Duties
- Participate in training sessions and skill development opportunities.
- Support cross-departmental needs when appropriate.
- Perform other duties as assigned to ensure successful event execution.
Skills & Experience
Required
- Minimum of high school diploma or equivalent
- 2 years of experience in live event video production
- Strong understanding of video systems (switching, playback, routing, LED, cameras, projection)
- Proficiency with Google Workspace and basic office tools
- Strong problem-solving abilities and calm performance under pressure
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Attention to detail in both pre-production and on-site execution
- Ability to travel regularly and work nights/weekends as scheduled
- Valid Iowa driver’s license with acceptable driving record
- Class B CDL (or willingness to obtain within 6 months)
- Ability to lift 50 lbs, climb ladders, operate lifts/forklifts (training provided)
Preferred
- Experience with Barco Event Master systems (S3/E2)
- LED processing experience (Brompton, Novastar)
- Streaming and virtual event platforms (vMix, OBS, Zoom, etc.)
- Projection mapping exposure
- Experience operating jibs or specialty camera systems

Physical Requirements
This role involves lifting up to 50 lbs, climbing ladders and trailers, crouching, bending, kneeling, extended periods of walking or standing, and working aloft or on uneven terrain.
