Job Purpose & Position Overview
The Tribal Transit Lead Driver will be responsible for assisting the Office Manager in overall administration and daily operations of the Winnebago Tribal Transit Program. The Lead Bus Driver will: Create routes, determine transit needs of Winnebago, hire and supervise bus drivers, order busses and equipment, set and monitor policy as prescribed by the Tribe and Federal Transit Authority, coordinate maintenance, maintain related records and insure compliance with Grant Transportation Guidelines. 
 
Specific Job Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Demonstrate the Winnebago Tribe’s core mission, vision, and values.
  • Hire, Train, supervise and evaluate the performance of bus drivers. 
  • Will maintain a regular shift on the route/drive schedule.
  • Ensure drivers are licensed) CDL w/ “P” endorsement), tested and certified as required by law to drive agency vehicles. 
  • Conduct regular staff meetings and problem-solving sessions. 
  • Design, provide and routinely assess driving, safety and other related trainings. 
  • Maintain policies, procedures and handbooks per federal/State regulations and agency directives and guidelines. 
  • Delegate and follow up staff assigned to transportation related assignments
  • Follow up with Winnebago Tribe Physical Resources Director, Winnebago Tribal Council, WinneVegas Casino and insurance carriers in the event of agency vehicle accident. 
  • Defining routes: identifying the most efficient routes and arranging for ample staffing to meet the transportation needs of passengers. 
  • Schedule routine, emergency repairs, and maintenance of all agency vehicles. 
  • Arrange for back-up vehicles when necessary. 
  • Ensure daily, monthly, and annual inspections of agency vehicle(s) occur. Maintain records of gas and oil expenditures and routine maintenance in accordance with maintenance contact.  
  • Conduct and attend meeting and trainings as appropriate. Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications/Skills:
  • High School Diploma or GED required. Associated and/or Bachelor’s Degree in Business or related field preferred. 
  • Strong knowledge of bus transportation systems, typically acquired by working a minimum of one years as a transportation manager or three years as a bus driver combined with supervisory or management experience.
  • Bus Driver “trainer” experience highly desirable.
  • Working knowledge of state and local regulations governing public/private transportation schedules. 
  • Ability to coordinate efficient routes with service and educational schedules. 
  • Strong oral/written communications skills. 
  • Must have CDL License with “P” endorsement. 
  • Will be required to fill in as driver when necessary.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • Yes. Will be responsible for the supervision of all Tribal Transit Bus Drivers. This will include coordination of routes and driver scheduling ensuring all routes/drives are provided coverage.

 Physical Requirements:
  • Normal to heavy office work which includes the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Regularly required to walk, stand, and sit for extended periods of time and use hands to operate computer keyboard, phone, and various office equipment. Occasional kneeling, stooping and bending.
  • While performing daily duties, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear.
  • Physical capability, strength and coordination adequate to operate a 20 and up passenger bus.

  • Reasoning/Analysis
  • Works with minimal to no supervision
  • Substantial decision making relative to personnel, safety, fiscal, and operations management. 
  • Significant decision making in the recommendation of training and/or referral to training. 
 Language Requirements:
  • Must possess the ability to read, write, and speak the English language fluently.
  • Must be able to continually and effectively employ professional verbal and written communications skills.
