Substitute Nurse

The Substitute Nurse plays a critical role in maintaining the health and safety of our students at The Windward School. This position involves providing temporary nursing care and health services when the primary school nurse is unavailable, ensuring continuity of care and adherence to health protocols. The Substitute Nurse will assess and manage student health concerns, administer medications, and respond to emergencies in a timely and professional manner. They will collaborate closely with school staff, parents, and healthcare providers to support student well-being and promote a safe learning environment. Ultimately, this role ensures that students receive appropriate medical attention and health education, contributing to their overall academic success and personal development.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Valid and current NYS Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of employment.
• Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS)
• Experience working in pediatric or school health nursing preferred.
• Strong understanding of common childhood illnesses, injuries, and chronic conditions.
• Ability to pass background checks and comply with school district requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Previous experience as a school nurse or substitute nurse in an educational setting.
• Knowledge of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and 504 Plans related to student health needs.
• Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems used in schools.

Responsibilities:

• Provide first aid and emergency care to students as needed during school hours.
• Administer prescribed medications and treatments in accordance with school policies and healthcare provider instructions.
• Monitor and document student health records, including immunizations, allergies, and chronic conditions.
• Communicate effectively with students, parents, teachers, and healthcare professionals regarding student health issues and care plans.
• Maintain a clean, safe, and well-stocked health office environment.
• Follow all applicable laws, regulations, and school policies related to student health and confidentiality.

The Substitute Nurse utilizes clinical nursing skills daily to assess and manage student health concerns, ensuring accurate and timely care. Strong communication skills are essential for effectively interacting with students, parents, educators, and healthcare providers to coordinate care and provide health education. Organizational skills are critical for maintaining detailed health records, managing medication administration, and ensuring compliance with health regulations. Problem-solving abilities enable the nurse to respond swiftly and appropriately to emergencies and unexpected health issues. Additionally, adaptability and professionalism are vital as the nurse works in diverse school environments and adjusts to varying student needs and school policies.
